National Library

The National Library in Gyongseong is one of the monumental sights in the capital of Yashida. It is located on the Western side of the Bailong River and the epicentre of the scholastic part of the city since the National University is located only a few minutes away by foot.   The National Library hosts nearly all literature, both fiction and non-fiction, written and published in the Yashidal language as well as a host of foreign literature. Most of the foreign works are available in the original language but some do have additional translations. The library also offers translations for foreign texts, although this service tends to be rather expensive to request.   The library is sectioned into five pavillions, with the four side-pavillions sorted according to the nine sciences, and the main pavillion, which also includes the entry hall, dedicated to the arts.

History

Initially built for the new Governor of Gyongseong Zhao in 805, the building had major fire security issues and burned down almost completely six times while Zhao held the office. While later investigations declared the fires as arson and terrorist attacks by the Zhao' political opponents since letters and further incriminating evidence were found in 836, the newly appointed governor Prince Jin requested an exorcism of the place and tore down the remains of the first building in 825. The new construction plans saw an expansion of the grounds and an energetically improved layout of five courtyards, with the construction process officially finishing in 829, now donning the name Gyongseong Palace.   In 1254 the Gyongseong Palace became the temporary court palace of King Mengyao and saw to this purpose for six years. Since King Mengyao deemed the Gyongseong Palace unfitting to hold court properly, the Court Palace thus was built and held court in 1272 for the first time, thus the Gyongseong Palace saw a change in both name and purpose. It was renamed Western Palace as the current Court Palace is located on the Eastern side of the Bailong River.
