Foresters Ethnicity in Hastened Delight | World Anvil

Foresters

"Foresters" is a general term used to describe nomads living in Tightland that intend to remain independant from The Crown and, to a certain degree, the Tightish Empire.
They do not benefit from any goverment services due to not being registered inhabitants, and may be exciled in the case that legal action is taken.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Since Foresters may contain orphans or people who no longer wanted to live in the Empire for one reason or another, names are often quite a flexible manner.
According to the knowledge currently avalable, it would appear that Foresters operate in a clan-like constellation, with the individual identifying themselves with the name of their leader.
Since this is an attribute that may change fairly quickly and misinformation is easily spread among these folk, these names are not documented in official records.

Other names

Since the Foresters are a so-called "free folk", they take names from all manner of ethnicities often modifying or entirely inventing names to suit them.
It is also not uncommon for individuals to carry multiple names that they use for differing purposes.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Outer Tightish is frowned upon in these communities, and communication is almost entirely in a dialect of Inner Tightish, although this dialect makes use of many words not contained in a typical vocabulary.
The integration of animal mating calls into these communiqué is surprisingly common, allowing covert communication in a natural environment.
These calls may even be conciously adjusted to fit the current season.

Shared customary codes and values

Perhaps one of the most defining aspects of the Forestersis their belief that the current times are moving in the wrong direction, and that technological progress and complex societal systems such as laws and economics are flawed principals.
It is believed that this 'free, simple life' is what makes it so attractive for more young and impulsive individuals to join the Foresters.
There is also a small number of individuals who believe the fact that no cause for dissatisfaction through the government is cause for dissatisfaction, hypothesising absurd notions of thought-manipulation or propaganda.
There is no basis to support these theories and the government does not inhibit them from leaving the Empire.

Average technological level

Although they may live in a rather outdated fahion, sometimes even exhibiting traits attributed to the time after the loss of the Heol-Bri, they may be given gifts or purchase old tools from local inhabitants.
Even so, they will not accept any mechanical devices or chemicals, since it conflicts with their view of the world.

Common Dress code

As far as has been observed, Foresters wear plain and practical garments, oftentimes using self-produced, undyed cloths such as linen.
It has been reported that during hunts in the warmer times loincloths are worn and the bodies covered in mud, providing a level of hygiene and modesty while gaining camoflage and being less encumbered.
Individuals who have joined the Foresters may still be attached to certain garments from their previous way of life, lending to some rather unorthodox interpretations of what could be considered, in the furthest sense of the word, fashion.

Art & Architecture

Hand-carved figurines and ornaments, sometimes decorated wih other natural resources such as dried tree sap, berries, blooms or leaves are a common sight where Foresters have passed, many with a surprising level of artistry and proficiency allowing them to be sold for profit or in exchange for tools on the rural black market.
A rather perculiar recurring theme on these figurines is called a baymark, which is carved into a short, stubby flute and has been sighted in urban areas, even as far as the old town of Penchester.
Foresters tend to roam the country on foot, setting camp in the canopy, under bridges or in caves instead of building a small abode.
Since travelling shows became more popular, however, Foresters have also been observed making use of carriagery and small, rectangular boats.
These modes of transport are often highly decorated with motives of nature, but may also retain original lettering from a previous owner.
