Elder Night
Elder Leviathan; Patron of the Paranoid, Fantastical, and Occultists
"Only the Strong Survive", the Masked One. That was a warning as well as a command. The world is built in ways you couldn't possible fathom, just waiting to unleash some new nightmare to kill you. Elder Night was born knowing this. Elder Night knows that the world is constructed in a series of hopeless battles driven by mysterious forces in which there will be no true winners but many losers. Elder Night knows that the world outside of itself is always, to some degree, looking to hurt it. That which is strangest carries the most harm. Only by materializing fear into order can Elder Night triumph. And so, over the centuries, it has ripped, torn, dominated, persuaded, imagined, imposed, and enchanted until everything bigger than it was dead.
Elder Night has grown so large and terrible in its largeness. It has accumulated many undersea Octoperson and Squiddle cultists. Its ancient fantasies and comforting stories have become belief systems. Its fictions and rituals and dreams have become occult secrets. It surrounds itself with kindred spirits, elevated to oracles and priests. But Elder Night is a mercurial beast prone to sudden shifts of belief based on its mood and goals. Night's followers may have dogma but the beast does not. It is always ruled by the war in its heart between hopeful mysticism and panicked paranoia.
Who becomes warlocks of Elder Night? Well, for underwater people, Elder Night is actually fairly accessible for many mystics looking to expand their horizons to the greater ocean. But for surface-dwellers, Elder Night is frequently succumbed to as a kind of accidental curse or is invoked by occultists desperate for secret power. Generally speaking, Elder Night hates the non-aquatic world as alien to it and therefore potentially evil. But Elder Night is, at its core, both hypocrite and an expert liar to itself, so surface warlocks exist at similar rates to any of the more hostile Elder Leviathans.
Elder Night draws in the paranoid, those who have wrapped themselves in elaborate self-deceptions, and occultists who relate deeply to the simultaneous fear and fascination with mystery that Elder Night embodies. Elder Night relates deeply to people who are bound in self-destructive loops of their own creation, especially those who embedded storytelling into those loops. Elder Night is not a totally malevolent and destructive presence (a radical acceptance and relationship with mystery can form in many ways), but it is a challenge to not have it be negative in some way.
Elder Night is a powerful underwater political force in the waters around South Suneka(location:492ab4f9-fa36-47d1-934e-e5b88549cf0b), Southeast [Ukaram, and Northern Maradia. Elder Night may be temperamental and ruled by its fears and fantasies, but it is consistent enough to rule a diverse coalition of Cephapeople and Leviathans. It tends to keep a very light touch , but it is very good at preventing infighting among those who ritually serve it. Most of its supposed "servants" are more ritual subjects than direct tributaries, but those who try and slay Elder Night will find a surprisingly powerful underwater coalition in their way. Elder Night has created a series of grand sanctuaries and homes in the many reefs and trenches of its area, though it moves frequently and hides its presence to avoid any possible threats.
While based in its corner of the ocean, this Leviathan has warlocks all around the world.
Elder Night embodies mysteries and the unknown in its magic and abilities. Those who make contact with Elder Night experience the Leviathan as a mysterious, infinite presence of darkness that blends into a cosmic space-sea. Elder Night's magic and presence is typically marked by a mixture of occult and cosmic aesthetics.
