Octoperson

Just beneath the waves, a vibrant world awaits those able to survive the ocean's depths. The masters of the underwater world are the Octopeople: large sentient octopi ranging from brown to orange to blue in coloration, often wrapped in kelp and covered in bags and tools. While other sentient underwater races exist, it is the Octopeople who shape and rule the massive reef cities that dot the underwater topography. These cities produce tools for the underwater races, both simple and complex.   As Player Characters, Octopeople have the following statistics:
  • +2 Int, +1 Strength
  • Can use Octoperson devices, can create intricate devices (DMs discretion) when time and resources are available
  • Can control severed arms; if they want severed arms to do something complex, the instruction needs to have been given before severing. Will grow back arms after 1 week of long rests.
Common Octoperson designs that your character would know or make independently:
  • Voiceboxes: Voiceboxes are translators that allow the Octoperson to speak one other selected living language when operated. Voiceboxes are required to speak non-aquatic languages. An Octoperson requires the help a fluent speaker of that language to produce a voicebox for it. Materials cost 1gp
  • Harpoon Gun: Harpoon guns fire ocean debris at a target, allowing for ranged underwater fighting. Does 1d8 + Dexterity damage with a range of 80 feet and only works underwater. Materials cost 5sp.
  • Aqualung: Aqualungs allow a Cephaperson to breathe above water for up to 5 hours, after which it must be refueled with saltwater. Materials cost 1gp.
  • Mechanical Hand: Mechanical hands are prosthetic hands for the tentacled races, allowing for fine manipulation of items. Materials cost 5sp.
  • Mechanical Legs: Allow for on-land travel at 20 feet/round for tentacled races. Materials cost 2gp.
There are several Rare Designs for unique machines that have been perfected over the centuries. These require special training and lots of time to make. These designs are not universal, and often can only be found in specific locations.
  • Power Armor: Allows for the operator to travel on land for up to a week before refueling with salt water. Artificially raises the user's strength to 16 if the strength is below that. Provides armor as Full Plate. Can be further augmented.
  • Chlorine Gas Canister: A powerful poison grenade, highly unethical.
Octopeople are one of the four sentient aquatic races, along with: Squiddles, Cuttlefolk, and Blessed Sharks   Like all aquatic species, The Masked One is their creator and patron

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Octopeople lay eggs very sparingly but in large batches - broods of eggs number in the hundreds to thousands. Many of these eggs do not successfully hatch or produce children that survive, but the handful that survive the first week grow extremely quickly. These youngsters are usually raised communally, as parentage can be difficult to trace.

Growth Rate & Stages

Octopeople live comparatively short lives, usually 25-40 years. Their childhoods, however, are extremely brief- their brains develop quickly, and they master speech and movement within weeks to months of hatching. Their brains are astonishingly good at learning and retain neuroplasticity all of their lives, allowing them to master languages and concepts even at older ages.

Ecology and Habitats

Octopeople thrive in reef environments and the majority of octopeople live in or around an urban reef area. As such, most live in the equatorial belt, in semi-shallow coastal shelves. Outposts do exist on underwater peaks in deep water and colder regions, leading to small isolated reef-towns growing outside of the main coastal-shelf network.   Some octopeople live outside of the reef cities, choosing instead to live in wandering tribes that migrate seasonally in non-arctic waters. The majority of these stick to coastal shelves as well, though rumors exist of tribes who live in deeper waters.
