Akatlan Riverlands

The Akatlan riverlands are a mountainous region dotted with lush valleys and defined by the great rivers that run through them. The mountains are rich with gold, silver, and obsidian, with many inactive volcanic basins. The valleys are pristine temperate forest, shielded from the outside world by the surrounding mountains. The rocky soil is not as perfect farmland as the rest of the Sunekan heartlands, but with care and effort the valleys have brought forth great yields of wheat, and potatoes grow near uncontrollably here.

Geography

The Akatlan riverlands are 575 by 560 miles by its largest estimates. At the core of the riverlands are the Omayir and Exayir rivers, which form together into the Omapal (also known as the Greater Omayir or the Pol Omayir). The Omayir river flows from the Northeast, is larger, and runs through far flatter ground. The Exayir river flows from the Northwest, is smaller, and its river valleys are more isolated and rocky.    After both rivers join up into the Omapal, the combined waters flow out from the mountains and hills into the open plains adjacent to the Gwalan Valley and Valley of Tuzek. Eventually, the Omapal flows into Lake Adato in the South (which is also fed by the much smaller Mekir River from the West). Seasonal rivers then drain water from Lake Adato further South, into the massive Lake Zokara.

Fauna & Flora

Deer and mountain goats are plentiful in these lands, as are ibexes and even llamas. Cougars, eagles, and dhole are common as well. The valleys are home to small groups of boar as well. The river itself hosts a great variety of freshwater fish, and even a few alligators in the South.

Natural Resources

Huge gold deposits have been found in the mountains, though a near millennia of mining has stripped many of the easy-to-reach surface deposits. Smaller silver and obsidian deposits have also been found, and there is still plenty obsidian left for mining and export. Small veins of Kilusha have also been mined here, though nothing out of the ordinary for a mountainous region.

History

The history of the riverlands is no single history, for the Northwest Exayir river valleys have always stood apart from the rest. Due to their isolating geography and close proximity to the Adira Mountains, they have always been something of a borderland reminiscent of Ikatlan. While the entire riverlands were briefly held by a single Akatlani republic in the 400s ME, there has been no moment of absolute unity since. Periodic migrations and invasions - Prisms from the North and Horse-riding plains tribes from the Southwest- and conquest by outside empires have only driven deeper wedges between the Exayir peoples and the Omayir peoples. To this day, the Sunekan Republic of Akatlan rules the East and South, while the twelve successor republics to the now-destroyed Republic of Ekatalu continue in complete independence in the Northwest.
