Heart of the Woods

Heart of the Woods is the ninth mission of The Custodian. It sees Carl Johnson and Eve Matthews investigate Back o' Beyond for any sign of her parents. The find more than they bargained for, however, when Eve's family's car activates into a Ghost Cars and attempts to kill them.

Summary

Sometime after concluding his investigation with Sarah Williams, Carl Johnson receives a call from Eve Matthews who says that she needs to meet with him immediately outside of Back o' Beyond, though neglects to mention why outside of having myth information. When they both arrive, they journey into the woods, though she is still light on giving any details. They discuss what has happened since they last spoke, with Eve revealing that she has done as he asked and stayed out of trouble, whilst CJ reveals that he has a plan in place to find out what The Custodian is doing with the remains of the myths. He does not, however, tell her that this plan is already in action. As they move further into the woods, they eventually come across the Bloodpool, though they do not recognise it as such yet. They eventually come across Eve's family car, which sits in a beaten-up condition beside the pool, and her mother's body lies alongside it. Eve runs over in full distress, prompting CJ to follow and enquire what is going on. Eve explains that it's her mother, who had gone missing along with her father and several others. CJ examines the area, where he finds footprints presumably left by myths around the lake edge, as well as a locket on the ground. CJ hands it to Eve, and she identifies it as her mother's locket, which she is eternally grateful to him for finding. CJ takes this moment to ask where the myth activity is, to which Eve admits that there is none, and that she just wanted his help in coming here to find her parents. CJ is slightly disappointed at being misled, and he tells her that if she wanted his help then she merely needed to act; she didn't need to lie and he would have helped her regardless. Both this act, combined with finding the locket, serve to further develop Eve's feelings towards CJ. After Eve recovers from the emotional impact of findind her mother, CJ suggests that they leave for the night, and notify the authorities. Eve, though initially apprehensive, agrees, and so they move to leave. However, as they do, Eve's parents car suddenly activates into a Ghost Car and attempts to kill them. They are forced to fight the driverless vehicle, and eventually manage to stop it by causing it to explode. Now safe, CJ escorts Eve home, and he gently refuses her offer for him to stop over for the night.
