Wizards' Guildhall
This great pyramid stands as the headquarters of Greyhawk’s most powerful guild—the Guild of Wizardry. Fortunately for the rest of the city, the wizards are usually too preoccupied with their arcane studies to meddle excessively in politics.
The Guild of Wizardry
Founded in 393 CY by Zagig Yragerne, the Mad Archmage, the Guild serves as the principal seat of magical research and training in the Flanaess.
- Membership is open to wizards of any race or alignment, except those with undeniably evil intentions.
- The annual fee is 100 gp, but the benefits include discounted spell instruction, priority access to rare spells, and reduced prices on spell components and magical items.
- Wizards who actively contribute rare spell components—such as powdered lich dust or black dragon blood—gain greater privileges and lower costs within the Guild.
- The Guild crafts magical items on commission, with notable clients including Org Nenshen , the Master of the Thieves' Guild .
- The Guild also provides spellcasting services to various city organizations, most notably the Jewelers and Gemcutters Guild , in exchange for rare gemstones and powders used in spellcraft.
Kieren Jalucian
Master of the Guild of Wizardry & Principal of Greyhawk University of Magical Arts
Kieren stands 6'3", weighs 200 lbs., and appears to be in his early 30s, though he is undoubtedly much older. With a mane of sandy blond hair, a flair for fine Celenian silks, and a taste for exotic perfumes, he is as much a socialite as a mage.
- Beloved by the public, Kieren maintains an approachable and frivolous persona, masking the serious conviction with which he wields his power.
- He refuses to engage in political rivalries within the Directing Oligarchy, preferring to enjoy his position and use it for the common good.
- Romantically involved with Jallarzi Sallavarian , the two are often seen flying about the city on his carpet of flying or dining at the Golden Phoenix.
- He occasionally ventures into the seedier parts of the city, engaging in arm-wrestling contests—sometimes with a stealthily cast strength spell to even the odds.
- While he owns few personal magical items, he has unrestricted access to the Mage of Exchange’s vast collection of enchanted artifacts.
The Porters
The dwarven porters safeguard the Guildhall and the University, maintaining strict security and order within its walls.
- No entry is permitted to non-members except by invitation, with guest names logged before dusk the previous day.
- The only exception is for those dealing in magical items or spell components, who are escorted directly to Kondradis Bubka, the Mage of Exchange.
- The adamantite gates of the Guildhall negate 75% of spells cast at or through them, preventing mind-affecting magic, teleportation, and dimension door—though escaping via magic remains possible.
- The peephole for visitors moves at will on the outer gate surface, creating a disorienting effect for newcomers.
Dwarves, known for their gruff demeanor, treat outsiders with suspicion but show deference to high-ranking figures:
"A very good morning, Mr. Jalucian, sir! Miss Sallavarian awaits you in the refectory."
"Good afternoon, Mr. Tenser, sir! Important message from Mr. Bigby for you at the porters' lodge."
Darnak Khorshkan
Head Porter, Guild of Wizardry
The Khorshkan family has served as Guild porters since the Guild’s founding, their steadfast guardianship a legacy of Zagig Yragerne himself.
- Dwarves were specifically chosen by Zagig due to their innate resistance to magic, making them ideal protectors.
- The family helped construct the Guildhall and has resided in the Head Porter’s apartment in the gatehouse for generations.
- Darnak is rarely seen away from his post, though he occasionally visits the Barge Inn and other dwarven haunts with his apprentices.
The Guild Library
The library of the Free City's Guild of Wizardry is reputed to be the finest collection of magical tomes in all of Oerik. Among its countless scholarly volumes are rumored to be the spellbooks and notes of Zagig the Archmage himself. The library is a vast, windowless hall, lined with towering shelves groaning under the accumulated weight of centuries of magical knowledge.
While the library’s collection contains every known spell (and perhaps some long-forgotten ones), access is strictly regulated. Guild members may only study a requested spell after approval by a senior guild member. For spells above 4th level, the personal consent of Guildmaster Kieren Jalucian is required.
Additionally, a fee is charged for copying spells, ranging from 100 gp to 1,000 gp per spell level, depending on the wizard's standing. Those who actively contribute magical components or items pay less, while infrequent visitors pay more.
The library closes at dusk and reopens at dawn, though senior guild members may gain after-hours access. Security is formidable—eight invisible, magically-domesticated beholders each guard a section of the collection. These guardians do not typically communicate with one another to avoid disturbing Jawal Sevemain, the librarian.
Jawal Sevemain
Librarian, Guild of Wizardry
First-time visitors are often startled by Jawal’s sharp aquiline features, inky black skin, silver hair, and piercing violet eyes—for he is a renegade dark elf, devoted to the library’s preservation for over 150 years.
Jawal rarely leaves his collection, except at the direct request of Kieren Jalucian or the Circle of Eight. He sleeps on a pallet in the corner of the library, and meals are brought to him. Those who wish to consult him must do so on his own terms.
He despises bright light, keeping the library dimly lit and filled with shifting shadows. Visitors often feel as though they are being watched.
Respected by the Circle of Eight , Jawal’s knowledge of magical texts is unparalleled. However, he holds little regard for most wizards, reserving respect for only archmages and true masters of the Art. He detests Kondradis Bubka, the Mage of Exchange, and Heironymous Tigana, the Guild Alchemist, considering them mercenaries rather than true scholars. Surprisingly, he shares a strong camaraderie with Darnak Khorshkan, the Head Porter, recognizing in him a similar dedication to duty.
Magical Items & Spell Components
Guild members seeking to buy, sell, or donate magical items or spell components must deal with Kondradis Bubka, the Mage of Exchange.
Kondradis Bubka
Mage of Exchange
Kondradis is a 57-year-old, balding man with gray hair and rheumy eyes. He wears a simple gray robe, devoid of ornamentation.
He oversees all magical transactions within the Guild and specializes in divination magic. Secretive about his work, he has developed his own powerful version of the Identify spell, named Bubka’s Superior Identification, which he keeps strictly hidden from other guild members. This 5th-level spell can be cast up to five times per day using Mordenkainen’s Lucubration, a technique he learned directly from Mordenkainen himself.
Heironymous Tigana
Alchemist, Guild of Wizardry
Heironymous is a spectacularly ugly man, standing 4'11" with bulging gray eyes, a massive red-veined nose, and sparse tufts of wiry gray hair. Despite his geriatric appearance, he remains spry and sharp-minded at 71 years old. He is perpetually irritable, dressed in a leather jack and apron, and reeked of sweat, acidic vapors, and boiled cabbage.
Heironymous maintains a private laboratory in the guild basements, requiring appointments for access at least two days in advance. He obsessively labels his materials in an ancient Suloise runic alphabet, known only to him and Kondradis Bubka.
He is a master alchemist, possessing almost every known potion recipe. Of particular value are the potions of longevity, requiring rare ingredients like elf bone marrow and blood.
Though reclusive, Heironymous harbors an expensive taste for fine wine, frequently venturing into the markets himself, pushing his crates atop a Tenser’s Floating Disc. On rare occasions, he flies invisibly to Old Mother Grubb’s, a gambling den, indulging in its seedy atmosphere despite the risks.
The University
One of the Guild’s primary functions is the training of wizards, welcoming fresh-faced apprentices each year to begin their studies—their first spell always being Read Magic.
The University provides elite training and research opportunities, boasting some of the finest wizards in Oerik as instructors. Secure underground laboratories allow for magical experimentation and discovery.
Tobin Potriades
Senior Tutor, The University
A genial man of about 90 years old, Tobin has long abandoned counting his exact age. He is rotund, fond of fine food and wine, and still deeply invested in the instruction of young mages.
Despite rapidly failing eyesight and poor hearing, he refuses magical remedies, relying on thick half-moon spectacles and a cumbersome ear trumpet.
Ephraim Blackrod
Master of Ceremonies
The role of Master of Ceremonies was established by Zagig the Archmage in the founding charter of the Guild of Wizardry and University. Traditionally passed from father to son, the position ensures that the Guild’s ancient ceremonies and rituals are upheld.
Dressed in ceremonial robes and clutching his staff of office, Ephraim patrols the halls, ensuring that events such as the annual pickled quails’ egg banquet and the first-year raft race down the Processional proceed as ordained.
Though often seen as a figure of amusement, Ephraim takes his duties with solemn seriousness. His sharp tongue and strict enforcement of tradition ensure that even the most rebellious students respect his authority.
Many within the Guild question the necessity of his post, arguing for its elimination in the modern age of magical science. However, Zagig’s founding charter remains ironclad, and no one dares to test whether the Master of Ceremonies’ presence is vital to maintaining the Guild’s magical integrity.
