Few guilds in Greyhawk rival the Jewelers and Gemcutters in their sense of self-importance. Though their wealth and influence are undeniable—the guildmaster, Bodmi Hollardel, even holds a seat among the city’s Directing Oligarchy—their gatherings are marked by an excess of pomp and ceremony that borders on the absurd.
Beneath its lavish halls, the guild’s heavily secured vaults may contain anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands of gold pieces’ worth of uncut gems. Access to these riches is tightly controlled, with only a select few members permitted near the strongroom.
Above ground, the main hall is an opulent display of extravagance. Sumptuous draperies in deep crimson and royal blue hang from the walls, framing elaborate tapestries depicting legendary gemcrafting techniques. The floors are covered in rare exotic carpets, and every available space is adorned with gilded artwork and ostentatious décor. The sheer excess of it all would make even the wealthiest nobles blush.
Every week, the guild members convene for their infamous gatherings, donning ceremonial attire as ostentatious as their hall. Each member wears a flowing cape with exaggerated, padded shoulders and an ornate crown adorned with antlers from rare and exotic herd beasts. One of the most prestigious and influential guilds in the Free City, the Guild of Jewelers and Gemcutters holds immense wealth and power, thanks in part to its major stakes in the Cairn Hills mines. Its members, master artisans of rare skill, produce exquisite jewelry and flawlessly cut gemstones, many of which are destined not for local markets but for lucrative trade across the Flanaess, making Greyhawk’s gem trade one of its most profitable exports.
The Guildhall, located in Clerkburg , is a well-fortified bastion of commerce and security. Its vaults are safeguarded by powerful magical wards, an extra measure of protection due to the guild’s involvement in preparing rare and expensive arcane components for Greyhawk’s mages. A highly trained, well-armed, and handsomely paid contingent of guards stands watch at all times, their ranks occasionally reinforced by adventurers hired to devise—or test—new defensive measures. Those who succeed in improving the guild’s security are richly rewarded for their ingenuity.
Despite the immense wealth stored within its walls, the guild enjoys an unspoken truce with the Thieves' Guild , due in no small part to its Guildmaster, Bodmi Hollardel , who sits on the Directing Oligarchy and shares friendly ties with Nerof Gasgol and Org Nenshen . In return for the thieves’ restraint from targeting the Guildhall, the jewelers occasionally provide carefully selected intelligence regarding recent commissions and shipments—ensuring a delicate balance between commerce and cunning.
