Foundry
The southernmost district in the city, Foundry serves as Granmonts industrial heart, producing much of the city's metal. Most of the district is under direct and uncontested rule of the Beaumont Group via Beaumont Mine. Several mines are active within Foundry, including a few independent mines that are far too small to realistically compete with the heavily integrated Beaumont operation.
While smog is present throughout the entire city, as its source Foundry is by far the most polluted. Upon approaching this side of town own is met with a miasma that blots the sun and burns the lungs of the unacquainted, forcing sensitive individuals to wear bandanas over their mouths and limit time outdoors. The rivers and streams of Foundry don't fair much better, carrying waste products from mineral extraction and processing that stains the water black until it reaching the processing and purification plant of the eponymous Black River.
History and Culture
The mountains to the south have long been known to house veins of precious metals, including iron and dawnsilver, but it wasn't until the Beaumonts founded their mine that the area grew beyond short-lived mining expeditions. Most of Foundry has been built within the last fifty years.
Most of the district is under direct Beaumont administration with only the easternmost neighborhoods able to thrive without Beaumont support. Extraction and processing of materials remains by far the largest industry, although livestock butchering and rendering also takes place within Foundry. Due to the nascent nature of the districts growth most of the citizens of Foundry are transplants, coming in from the countryside or abroad in search of work. It's not uncommon to see multiple generations of one family living under one roof with every able bodied person contributing to the household. Its similarly common to see four young people crammed into a one-bedroom apartment. In all cases, residents endure cramped and harsh conditions in the hope of a better life.
Beaumont operations pay competitively, but with grueling hours that leave little energy for recreation. Off-duty employees often congregate at the local salons which are also able to cash their paychecks for the day and provide a hot meal, as many homes lack a kitchen. Every meal comes with an ale, and shared rounds is a frequently practiced social ritual. Due to the population density, lack of shared cultural background, stressful work, and rampant alcoholism stemming from the centrality of salons in Foundry life, violence and fights are incredibly common. This has provided ample reason for the Beaumonts to build up a "private security" force of mileau operators under the guise of peacekeeping. As this frees up gendarme resources for other districts, this privatized policing has been met with acclaim by the leadership of the city.
