Duala Jaass
Duala Jaass is an independent broker in Ossa, one of the thousands who set up deals between guild-families. This also makes her an excellent source of guild-family information. She served as Demir Grappo's spymaster when he was a governor in his youth. She draws the line at violence, and Demir knows not to ask her to do jobs that involve it. She has light Purnian skin, an easy smile, and an affected calm manner. She is also married.
STORY
After returning to Ossa from his self-imposed exile in the provinces, Demir Grappo goes to Duala Jaass for help with several projects. She helps him find the whereabouts of Thessa Foleer, discovering that a woman of her description and qualifications ended up at the Ivory Forest Glassworks under the name Teala, though no Teala worked previously at the Grent Royal Glassworks. She explains that the Ivory Forest Glassworks is owned by the Magna, who keep secrets about the place. Duala provides a list of secretaries from whom Demir could get more information about the glassworks. Duala also brokers several deals for Demir, buying him a lumbermill from the Stavri and a steel works from the Prosotsi. As a piece of friendly advice, she also warns Demir of rumors surrounding a secret silic war, though Demir already knew it concerned the guild-family secret race to invent a phoenix channel. After their meeting, Duala tells Demir it is a pleasure to work with him again because he always pays on time and is never boring. Demir kisses her a friendly goodbye and tells her that he would love to join her and her husband for dinner sometime in the future.
