The Freeisles
The Freeisles are an archipelago to the northwest of the continent of Chronan, where the stormy Mare Tempestas meets the warm waters of Mare Ardere. The islands host many settlements of species deemed to be mutants by the Eight States. Most of the residents moved to the islands during and after the Great War Between Order and Chaos, as they were forced to leave their old homes. The Order leave them mostly to their own devices, although there have been incursions in the past.
The different tribes on the Freeisles are not unified either, and their internal struggles have kept them relatively underdeveloped in comparison to the nations on the continent. There are however legends and profecies that one day heroes will return to unite the different tribes.
Most of the largest island, Wolland, is split between the "forest tribes" of the Wyldewode and the "marsh tribes" of the Sidheloch Fen. The former contain mostly fey folk, owlin, satyrs and tabaxi, while the latter is formed by giff, lizardfolk, bullywugs and yuan-ti. The treetop town of Nimwe Na Gi Eldertree is hidden deep in the forest, while the town of Lochlore is built on tall pillars above the swamp-bound lake. To the north rises the Emerald Hills, containing the burrows of the harengon "hill tribes", as well as the only skyport in the islands located on the village of Strawberry Slope. The fortress of Caer Runen on the south coast is home to a secluded cloister of monks. To the west, Brinepost acts as the main harbor of the island, recently taken over by the sea tribes. To the east lies Shaman's Retreat, where the spiritual leaders of each of the five main tribes congregate regularly to discuss current matters.
The "sea tribes", formed mostly by tortles, sahuagin and kuo-toa, also rule the second largest island, Tyrland. It is mostly a rough, mountainous island, but it contains the largest settlement on the Freeisles, the city of Hightide. In the Castle of Tides, the legendary Pirate King Kalo Makhto holds his lawless court. On the other side of the island divided by the Misty Mountains lies the ancient Temple of the Forgotten Gods, hidden by magic mist from the prying eyes of the Eight States. It is said to keep the records and relics of religions that are now banned in Chronan.
Dangerous shoals known as Breakwater Rocks lead from Tyrland to the third largest island, Halland, where the more peaceful members of the sea tribes live in the fishing port of Hallow Shallows, which extends both above and below the surface of the sea. On the highest point of the island is the sacred stone circle called the Circlet Cairn, where lie the graves of heroes of the War Between Order and Chaos - from the perspective of those that fought for chaos. It is prophesized that the Cairn will reveal the identity of the new hero that will unify the tribes of the Freeisles when they step into the circle, and that is why numerous aspiring warriors make a pilgrimage there when they come of age.
The fourth island, Framland, is home to the "grass tribes" containing leonin, minotaurs, loxodon and centaurs. They are scattered across the plains of the flat island, with only one larger settlement, the tent village of Fangfram, home to the shaman of the grass tribes.
Finally, the smallest of the inhabited islands is Scalland, containing the shanty town of Scabbad, home to goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears and others of their ilk. These so-called "reef tribes" are shunned by all the other tribes of the Freeisles for their mischievous and unsanitary ways. The island itself is little more than a rocky reef adorned by colorful marine flora.
