Quayz is a district within New Carydam. Bordered by The Library and The Sleepless
Culture of Quayz
The folk of Quayz often exhibit a particular pride of calling this district of hard-working individuals home. As such, some of the other folk of New Carydam view them as insular, as many Keysers prefer to keep the company of other Keysers. This has given rise to a popular saying "Where there is one Keyser, there is always two," which some clever Carydamian coined in reference to the interconnected lives of Quayz residents. It is considered impolite to reference this in earshot of a Keyser. Some of this pride exists as a relic of survival in the sometimes difficult circumstances of Quayz life. A sort of roughneck honor in putting up with whatever dreck and disaster life can throw at you. Keysers honor the individual that can be brought low by circumstances often outside their control, but then rise up and give back as good as they got.Demographics
The folk of Quayz, perhaps befitting its location on The Sleepless, mostly work among the maritime professions. There are several fishing outfits, longshore and stevedore firms, and shipping operations that have offices and personnel in Quayz. As it maintains the most accessible docks in New Carydam, many itinerant workers and travelers find accommodations here, especially in The Rattle.
Little Drembari contains a fair number of Drembari Isles expatriates and Bari food and culture can be found on display there.
Defences
New Carydam maintains a small fleet of navel defensive vessels stashed at the northernmost docks in Quayz and access to The Centipede, as it emerges from The Sleepless Sea is guarded by a massive chain and tower arrangement.
Industry & Trade
Perhaps unsurprisngly, the main trades here follow the professions of the folk who live in Quayz--fishing and shipping chief among them.
The appearance of Stonks Savings and Loan, however, has influenced a burgeoning interest in banking, especially of the completely gold-based variety.
Infrastructure
The most notable feature of Quayz--perhaps outside of the giant hulking figure of The Rattle--are the docks dotting the coastline.
Many of the residences in Quayz, The Rattle among them, are built into old and abandoned equipment and buildings. There are several discarded warehouses that have become homes to many tenement families, forming a more intimate and connected community within Quayz larger social structure.
History
Smuggling operations have, historically, been situated here. There are rumors of more nefarious undertakings currently rumbling under the surface.
Tourism
Cityfolk flock to Little Drembari, especially during its Hands of Baena festival held the first week of Memory (see Keshloamic Calendar). While there are many within the Bari community that earn part of their living thanks to tourist coin, there are some that resent their presence.
Geography
Quayz seems blanketed in a perpetual fog. Some days it is thicker than others. Strongest between midnight and six am, usually lightening by 8am.
