Ikkla's Legs

Ikkla's Legs is a monastic community devoted to the goddess Ikkla, who holds sway over the Night, the Mystery, and the Sea.   It is situated just off the shore of Quayz in New Carydam. The entire community is on tall stilts, positioned over The Sleepless.   The community is led by the Keeper of the Mystery who is usually the most senior permanent residents and is responsible for steering the direction of the abbey. The Keeper of the Night assists them in these efforts. The current Keeper of the Mystery is Cuthrea.   There is no Keeper of the Sea because the sea cannot be kept.

Purpose / Function

Ikkla's Legs is a bastion of support for those that follow Ikkla and those that seek to keep the Mystery and the Night present in the lives of everyday Cityfolk.    In addition to serving as a place of meditation and refuge for the goddess' parishioners, Ikkla's Legs also maintains a highly trained and well equipped search and rescue operation, entitled Black Sextant, that it dispatches to emergency situations up and down The Dog Coast. It is these efforts, along with the donations offered by devotees, that allow Ikkla's Legs to continue operations and keep their doors open for all that seek solace among the Night and the Sea.

Architecture

The abbey itself consists of a series of buildings separated into two main clusters. The larger cluster, butting up against Crackkeel Landing--the island in New Carydam's harbor--holds the main temple, administrative buildings, and accommodations for visiting parishioners. The smaller cluster holds residents for permanent residents of the community. A series of walkways (some more secure than others) connects the two clusters.

History

Established in 871 AC, the abbey has seen its fair share of prospering times along with moments of decline. Recently, it has enjoyed a resurgence in both donations and devotees, perhaps owing to the  particularly bad stormy seasons of recent years. These factors have driven many new parishioners to Ikkla, and the fortunes (and responsibilities) of those living in Ikkla's Legs have grown proportionally.

Tourism

Most that visit the Legs are connected to Ikkla in some way, either as active followers or curious potential followers. Some visitors, however, visit to pay respects to the courageous work that Black Sextant undertakes each time a storm batters the coast.
