Varangian Guardsman
The Varangian Guard is a brotherhood of warriors sworn to protect the most powerful leaders of the north. Unlike the Jaagrom, whose loyalty is to the land, the Varangians serve individuals, their oaths binding them to kings, jarls, and warlords. They are warriors of unmatched skill, recruited from the strongest fighters of many clans. Their armor is heavier, their weapons larger, for they are meant to be an impenetrable wall between their charge and death. To be named a Varangian is to live with a target on one’s back, for killing a Guard is often seen as the first step in toppling their master.
