Bres Nuada, the current Unna Maska of Clarion, is a figure defined by his ruthless ambition and unyielding adherence to the old ways of Fogholt. As the self-proclaimed ruler of the city, his rise to power was marked by the brutal overthrow of his mother, Magda. With a childhood overshadowed by his mother’s duties and his sister Alma’s interests, Bres channeled his resentment into a radical vision for Clarion. His obsession with the ancient customs of Fogholt, including the secretive practices of the Hollow Priests, drove him to enact a grim coup.
The Unna Maska of Clarion, Bres rules with a firm hand, enforcing the city's strict laws and traditions. His rise to power was marked by the resurgence of the old ways and the eradication of his mother's rule.
Bres Nuada has been the Lord of Clarion and self-proclaimed Unna Maska, since the beginning of his 40th year.
His childhood was tumultuous, and largely he felt ignored by his Mother, Magda, throughout. She was a kind and fair ruler, following in the footsteps of her predecessor as the Lady of Clarion. As he grew and was educated formally by a slew of tutors and nannies. During this time his mother had many attempts on her life, and yet, her kindness did not fade. Her eyes focused further on her duty, and Bres saw her less and less.
As he studied with his sister, Alma, it was said that they both took an interest in the ancient cultures of Fogholt, a land they both hailed from back in the ancient days.
Alma was interested in the origins of magic, and he in their culture, one of hidden identities and castes. Perhaps his hand was lead by his head tutor, for as he came in to adulthood, their relationship blossomed from that of teacher and student, to a romantic one.
For years Bres and his lover took escapes out of the city together, travelling north-west to the region their families started from, now an empty city of husks and ghosts, they both longed to rule over a kingdom as grand as Fogholt.
When they returned from a trip, they were met by Magda, who had gathered information slowly of their relationship. Bres had suspected Alma of revealing his relationship but never had the chance to back up his suspicions. Magda immediately took charge of the situation, sending away the tutor to the lands of Snowpeak, to live in exile for her indiscretions. Bres could not forgive this, he barely regarded Magda as his mother, and she had the gall to throw away his most true companion.
He conspired against his mother, and gathered a following of his own, using the old ways of Fogholt he would destroy her. He held palaver with his most trusted advisor, a former adventurer named Bastien Morrow. Bastien was old but enjoyed the comfort and money from being Bres’ full time bodyguard and advisor. Bres started hissect in the underbelly of Clarion. He promised power and riches to those who helped him, and so the Hollow Priests reignited. Masked and clad in cerulean and ivory as they once did in Fogholt, the follows of Unna Maska gathered in the streets in protest of the rule they were held under. They worked to spread lies of the heavy boot of Magda Nuada and how newer leadership was needed.
One night, Bres’ love returned and spoke of her exile, she had been recovered by Bastien Morrow, and with her back in his arms they set their plan in motion. Late one evening Bres met with his mother over supper to discuss a means to end this struggle. There he poisoned her, and brought her body into a quick paralysis.
In the dead of night, he carried his mother up above the markets of Clarion and performed the ancient rites of Fogholt, as a means to dishonor her. Bres contorted her body to resemble a raven, her ribs were severed from her spine and her lungs spread across them like wings.
She was discovered at dawn, as the bells of mourning rang through the city.
Bres declared himself the ruler now, and the Hollow Knights began to march through the city ensuring no one would stand up against him. The citizens here wish for her back, as everything has changed since he took hold.
