Spearing Medical Center
Named after one of the Unaligned Medical Relief Corps founders, Spearing Medical Center is a fully-equipped medical space station located in Varkesh territory. The hospital is owned and operated by the UMRC but includes staffing from the various Varkesh member states, including recent volunteers from the Drakari. The station's namesake, Dr. Brandie Spearing, also serves as head doctor and CEO.
Spearing operates as the primary medical center for the UMRC due to its size and equipment. The hospital was built with an expansive jump-drive system, allowing it to respond to various humanitarian crises, making the facility vital to the UMRC. The station's transit speed is far slower than a typical medical response ship due to its size and need for stability for patients. It also requires towing to enter and exit hyper-lanes. Despite these drawbacks, this jump-drive has allowed the UMRC to better respond to major disasters and outbreaks throughout the Varkesh.
Purpose / Function
The Unaligned Medical Relief Corps initially developed Spearing Medical Center as a central hospital for the UMRC and the Varkesh. Following the installation of the jump-drive system, the facility has become the organization's primary responder to significant disasters and outbreaks. The facility's arrival to relieve medical ships acting as first-responders allows these ships to carry on to other emergency sites as needed. The hospital also brings a large stock of supplies and equipment, highly experienced staff of varying species, and the capacity to house far more patients than any standard medical frigate.
Architecture
As a medical facility, the station's interior focuses on a clean and sterile environment. Hallways and rooms are brightly lit, with dual-purpose standard and UV lighting, with the walls painted either white or pastel. Each room and hallway is equipped with a full suite of sanitation supplies for rapid disinfection of all surfaces. Externally, the station is designed as a large disc of multiple levels, ringed by multiple docking ports that allow vessels of any size to dock.
The central sections of the station serve as administrative offices. The inner rings house long-term patients and intensive care units. The middle and outer rings hold various other medical facilities, including pharmaceuticals, triage, operating theatres, and even quarantine zones for viral and biological outbreaks. Several of the docks also lead directly into dedicated emergency treatment centers.
History
Spearing has served primarily as a central hospital for the UMRC, assisting in very few severe engagements. A prime example is the volcanic destabilization of a Hydari colony world, where Spearing came from a nearby minor emergency to the aid of the colonists in support of evacuation and treatment of wounded Hydari.
The hospital also played a vital role in response to a Sol Empire bioweapon known as the Omnivirus - A viral pathogen genetically programmed to kill anything that wasn't Human. Spearing's mobile nature and large capacity, combined with its quarantine zones, allowed it to act as the primary treatment center for afflicted Varkesh citizens. While the station served as a treatment center, the cure for the Omnivirus and a vaccine were developed and distributed from the station's virology labs.
Currently, Searing Medical Center sits in a Varkesh controlled star system neighboring Sukarino. From here, the hospital provides vital medical support and resources for UMRC volunteers providing humanitarian aid for the ongoing Drakari Civil War.
