Beatriz Despadida
Captain of the Brass Leviatian, Queen of the Ocean
"If you are trying to come on to me, it is not working"
-Beatriz to
Eris, when the latter fell into her arms
Beatriz was an Adw musar pirate in her 30's (born ca. 492 - 502). She is the captain of The Brass Leviathan and the owner of its Ship. Therefore, she is the boss of Deckie, Esbjorn, Iandal, Milum and Pipui.
Appearance
Beatriz was a taller woman, being 180cm. She is half Adw Musar, a human subspecies, which is indicated by the golden freckles on her body, primarily her face. Although she has scarlet hair, she lacks the tan skin tone normally typical of the Adw Musar people. She has grey eyes, often mean looking as she makes a point of making people take her serious, essentially giving her 'resting bitch face'. She is a fan of leather, as she wears a leather captain's hat, red captain's jacket and boots. She also wears grey leggings.Personality
Beatriz comes across as distant, often quite mean. She demands respect from everyone who crosses her path and as such acts aggressively when people refuse to acknowledge any authority she has. Crewmembers of the Leviathan are quickly taught to respect her wishes and not try anything malicious. Those who do walk the plank. Knowing her for a while, people tend to find out that she can be quite reasonable, even though it takes a while to earn her mutual respect. Her friends can sometimes catch a smile from her but she is not quick to lower her guard. When drinking with the crew, she is known to not drink more than a couple of bottles, as to stay sober enough to operate. She often comes off as a misandrist because she generally doesn't like dealing with men. This stems from unknown factors in her past and sexism towards her being a female leader of a criminal organization. Despite all of this, the Brass Leviathan crew consists mostly of men, and her best friend is Iandal, a man.Relationships
Iandal
Iandal is Beatriz's oldest crewmember and best friend. She made him loco-captain in case anything would ever happen to her.Esbjorn
Originally starting off rocky, Esbjorn suffered her wrath at one point but somehow managed to survive it. He grew to respect her and became a valuable member of the crew. It is currently unknown if she was aware of his passing.Daine Treebound
Beatriz was originally indifferent to Daine, unlike most men, as he actively wanted to join the pirates and showed respect towards her right off the bat. She knows he wants to be like her someday but feels like he has yet to prove himself. After she was freed by him and his friends, she initially kept a cool attitude around him and immediately ordered him to kill some remaining devoted skulkers near the town they had battled. Soon after they got back on board of the Eristhyne II, Daine approached his captain to talk about what she experienced on Beorday and about the letters he had found in the captain's quarters of the leviathan. She openly answered his questions, even going as far as to reveal her history with her father which she initially kept secret. When they reached the mainland and decided to gather allies to fight The Devoted, Beatriz told Daine that she was going to 'reach out' to some old rivals of hers, this being intimidating them into joining her or killing them. She told him that she would have liked him to join her, but that it was important that he kept his group of friends together whilst gathering allies elsewhere. Daine asked if that made him captain of his own crew, which Beatriz acknowledged, officially granting Daine the title of Captain.Eris
Beatriz met Eris on Beorday whilst the former was under charm of the devoted. Initially trying to free her peacefully, Eris came up to Beatriz without the crown on her head as to make her blind and seem non-threatening. After some stumbling did Eris manage to freeze the captain using a spell, only to realize that the crystal used to charm her was not around her neck like the other pirates. During a fight to get Beatriz freed, Eris insulted the captain as she could not believe a strong woman like her would be able to be charmed by a cult so easily. Beatriz did not take kindly to this, as after the fight and releasing her from her charm, she pointed to Eris and with an angrier tone than she normally uses told her to 'Never talk to me like that again lest you want to be killed'. Later during a boat trip back to the mainland whilst Beatriz and Daine were talking, Eris came up to them and asked Beatriz if she had embarrassing stories about the Halfling. Despite her earlier grudge, Beatriz happily obliged and told a story about how Daine tried to simulate a fight with a mop he used to swab the deck, causing him to stumble and dangle at the edge of the ship. Daine of course, denied any such thing happened.Ikran
A letter found in her secret cabin reveals that Beatriz and Ikran knew each other before The Devoted attacked her ship. It indicates that her experience with Ikran is quite negative as he supposedly threatened her crew in the past, and that she does not acknowledge said threats.History
Prior to the Relic hunters campaign
Much of her past was unknown, but that hasn't stopped stories from going around. A consistent tale is that she ran away from home after her father sold her off to be married to someone she didn't love. In many variations of this story, she ended up killing her father. This is however disproven by a letter found in her secret cabin, which is addressed to the man. In it she states that she is well, that she misses him but won't tell him were she is, as she knew he would come for her. She had later revealed to Daine that she was raised in a large trade city in Hamaitan, where her father was a wealthy trader. Sometime after she was born, her mother left her father, which 'broke' the man as Beatriz called it. This caused her father to drink his problems away and lose a lot of money. In an act of desperation, he sold off his own daughter to be married to a man she did not know, causing her to run away and steal a ship, ultimately becoming the pirate known as the Queen of the Ocean. She mentioned that she wished to go back to the days that her father was in a healthy state of mind, but that she resents him for what he did. In 525, the Brass Leviathan found itself near the shores of Phindanshire, where a young Daine was captured by them but decided to become part of the pirate gang. Beatriz made him a deckhand and eventually he wound up getting nicknamed 'Deckie'. Around 532, the crew came into possession of an amulet of unknown origin, alongside parts of the Moonstone. Little did Beatriz know that the moonstone shards would be used against them in order to make them work for the Devoted under a charm of sorts. Beatriz described in another letter that they put something around her neck, which most likely was the moonstone shard used to control her in particular.Arc 3: Pirate Arc
The party, unsure what to do after Esbjorn's death, decided to cast a Divination spell in order to locate the whereabouts of the captain of the Brass Leviathan. The flame guided Eris towards Beorday, the island they knew was being used by the devoted for their grand ritual. After killing Ikran and saving Iandal, the party found themselves on the island, and passing some investigation, Leodithas Auffrye scouted her in talks with someone, presumed to be Fana, at the crater where the summoning circle was being made. The party followed her tracks to an abandoned town on the other side to the island, where whilst most of the party hid, Eris tried to stumble her way toward Beatriz without wearing her crown, making her essentially blind in order to make the captain not feel threatened. After pulling some stunts most people would not succeed on with Beatriz, let alone whilst blinded, Eris managed to cast Hold Person on her in order to take the necklace off her neck, only to discover there was no necklace. Before the casting of the spell, Beatriz lashed her sword at Eris with such power that the wind felt heavy on her body as the blade stopped just in time for Eris to not be decapitated. Beatriz soon was freed from the spell, managing to attack some of the party and heavily damaging Daine, before fleeing to some nearby ruins. Meanwhile some Devoted members were hiding nearby and attacked the party as well. The party one by one stormed into the ruins where she had ran off to, and took turns attempting to freeze her with spells or grapple her. A lot of attempts were unsuccessful as Beatriz possessed enough willpower to not be taken by the spells and physical strength to escape any grapple attempt. After she cleverly hit everyone inside of the ruins with a whirlwind attack, she climbed the walls to the outside in order to be safe. She did not realize Leodithas was still outside, as she had not seen him prior to that, who managed to finally hold her with a surprise Hold Person spell. After the party surrounded her and Eris recasting another Hold Person, did they manage to take away the crystal that was located around her waist. Unlike the other pirates freed by the party, Beatriz immediately seemed to have recognized that she had her own will again, seemingly having planned what would happen were she freed from her charm. After recognizing Daine and scolding Eris for insulting her during the fight, she ordered Daine and by extension his friends to kill the remaining skulkers on the battlefield, to which the party obliged.Character Information
