Horologist

Horologists or as they commonly called watch or clockmakers. Horologists repair watches that the Timesetters use as well as maintain the clocks around the city of Birdencaster. The clocks are commonly the ones found in public squares but can be the clocks in buildings.   Horologists are trained on the job as this placement is an Extra Employment, to begin with, and is chosen at random. Horologists can be found in various Zones and Segments but can be found where there are clocks. When they are repairing a clock that is part of the public squares, they replace the one that needs to be repaired with a working version. The clock that is in need of repair is taken to their Clockworks Department, which is the same as the Timesetter's, in the City Hall in 2 12. The department has drawers of engineering drawings for parts that can be made.

Rules Of Conduct

The rules of conduct for the Horologists depends on what they are doing as part of the day to day job. If they are working in a building area. Greater care is given to the tools and parts so they do not drop on people heads by allocating a working area. Signs are put up near the working area to tell passersby that work there is work being done on and a clock and where the nearest clock is.

Career Progression

Career Progression relies on experience and tests to be able to progress in this role. This is unusual for professions in the City of Birdencaster as normally it requires one or the other, but not both.   Each level of Horologists has their own area within their department in City Hall. This allows Horologists to be easily identified. Sitting in the wrong workplace can create confusion. It is acceptable to stand next to a person of a different level to talk to someone.   All levels talk to Timesetters about clocks that are broken or in need of repair.

Level Progression

Level 1

Level 1 Horologists will create parts for the Level 2 Horologists by looking at Engineering drawings. Care and attention is needed as these mechanisms have low tolerances. Such as where one part needs to be within the millimetre to work correctly without rubbing against or breaking other parts.

Level 2

At Level 2, they maintain and repair the clocks of public squares as well as replacing the clocks in public squares. Level 2 Horologists, when they are not repairing public square clocks, will make parts for the Level 3 Horologists. They put in orders for parts to the Level 1 Horologists for the clocks that they are repairing or maintaining.

Level 3

Finally, at Level 3, Horologists repair clocks that are in buildings that have rust, or by replacing the weights for the mechanisms. They put in orders for parts to the Level 2 Horologists.
