Clockworks Department

The Clockworks Department can be found on the Second Floor of City Hall. The public purpose of this department is a place for the Horologists to repair and make parts for clocks. This also serves as a place for the Timesetters to place report to and to return and receive the expensive wristwatch for their duties.

Layout

The department is in all one room shared by the Horologist and Timesetters. It is the Horologists that take up the most space within the room, as the Timesetters spend most of their time outside of the City Hall.   The door to the room is a wooden frame with a square of clear glass with the logo of the organisation. The logo is of three gears in a triangular formation with gear in front with roman numerals in clock formation around the larger gear. The clock that is formed from this, and shows the time 10 to 2.   By the exit to the room is a metal plate with hooks on the wall for keys to access the clocks in public squares across the city of Birdencaster. The keys include the key to which is used to wind the clocks.   Along the same wall as the key rack stands filing cabinets for engineering drawings. There stand columns of filing cabinets. These cabinets, alternate between the materials needed, on the left, with engineering drawings on the right.   The materials in drawers are not the finished part as the material might be the right width or thickness or the may have not been added teeth or the structural metal is not square, shortened and finished off. For large parts, the metal is not stored the same way but rather stored vertically against a wall or in crates.

Desks

Two desks face away from the door for Horologists' and Timesetters' Managers. Facing them are the Horologist , the level 1 Horologist sit or work at tables closer to the managers. The higher levelled Horologist further away.   On the Horologist's desks, are the tools they require to make the parts and that are relevant to their level for example the Level 1 Horologist use needle files for their small parts whereas higher levels use the full-sized kind.

Daily Routines

Horologists

Horologists report for duty at the clockworks department and would go to their desk to continue working on parts or repair clocks. If a public square clock is repaired they are the ones to put the clock in reserves. It is the broken clocks that are taken that are swapped with working versions at the time. The now repaired clock will be swapped when another clock breaks.   If they are a higher level Horologist , may go to a clock that is part of the building and repair it there.   Unlike the Timesetters, they finish at around 5 pm. They complete anything they are working on, before going home or performing personal duties themselves.

Timesetters

Timesetters start their day by going into City Hall to clock-in and get a briefing on their route. If they are at a higher level, they may be alerted by their manager that a building’s owner has requirements to change the clock on their building. Before they leave they collect their wristwatch and leave on their route.   On the way back, they have recorded any issues with the clocks that may have happened. For example, one of the date indicators could not be changed or that one of the hands have fallen on the clock face. This is reported at the department and it is at this point their job for the day has finished. They have been given something else to do, such as another route or to check something in a public square.   Once they have finished their duties in the area of residence they return their wristwatch to the department and go home or perform personal duties.
