Seven Sisters - The Modern Pyramids | Сталинские высотки: современные пирамиды

There are only 14 buildings in the world, constructed using this project. The Seven Sisters are also known in Moscow as "Stalin's high-rises", cause most of them were built during the dictator's lifetime. There are 8 of these in the Russian capital, and six more - in Kyiv (Ukraine), Warsaw (Poland), Bucharest (Romania), Prague (Czechia), Riga (Latvia) and Nur-Sultan(ex Astana, Kazakhstan). Officially they were inspired by the Municipal building of Manhattan in New York, but they have a concealed real history known only to some in the Fringe Society.

Всего на Земле 14 зданий, построенных по конкретно этому архитектурному принципу. "Сталинские высотки", как их называют москвичи, так как многие из них были построены в годы жизни диктатора. В российской столице их восемь, ещё шесть - в Киеве, Варшаве, Бухаресте, Праге, Риге и Нур-Султане(Астане). Эти величественные здания, согласно официальным зданиям, изначально были вдохновлены зданием муниципалитета в нью-йоркском Манхэттене, но у них есть и другая, реальная история, известная лишь некоторым даже в Грани.

Purpose / Function

The Seven Sisters are buildings that are being used quite differently: some of them are universities, some - hotels, government buildings, museums... But all these buildings have a purpose: they try to accumulate as much magic as possible.
In the ancient times it was already known that magic is provided by arcane currents, also known as the Ley Lines, or, in places where they converge - "Places of Power". This term is known among fantasy lovers and esoterics, but unlike they're presented in media, the Ley Lines aren't actually static. They're dynamic. They're always on the move, and they're influenced by Sun.

Ещё в глубокой древности выяснили, что есть такая вещь, как арканные потоки, известные также как "Линии Лей" или "Места Силы" там, где оных потоков много. Однако в отличие от обывательского представления об этих невидимых, но осязаемых явлениях, магические потоки далеко не статичны. Они постоянно двигаются, перемещаются. Древние египтяне же узнали, что на потоки влияет солнце.

Magic is the gift of Amon. Magic is the gift of Ra. Magic is a slave to the gods, it's sole purpose is to fill our lives with wonders and joy. Great priests and sorcerers use it at gods' will to make life fruitful and secure. But magic is a free spirit: as soon as Ra sets on the horizon it tries to flee its' shackles, run away from slavery, hide in the very waters of the sky Ra is traversing each day. But it's never in time: each morning Ra wakes up, starts the trek through the sky and enslaves magic again, show it its place, pushing it back on the ground.

Однако магия своенравна и, стоит Ра скрыться, пытается сбежать прочь, на небосвод, спрятавшись в потоке, по которому плывёт лодка бога Солнца. Но каждое утро Ра пробуждается и показывает магии её место, возвращая её на землю.

Magical currents obey laws similar to natural water recycling, and thunderstorm. When sun shines magic gets pushed towards the ground by it's light. As soon as sun sets, it starts slowly rising, possibly still hampered by the moonlight. Ley Lines tend to slide upwards the various objects, including trees, or buildings, and strive to reach the highest possible point. This is why it reminds us of a lightning strike. How the ancient egyptians had managed to learn about this isn't really known but there are spells that allow observing the Ley Lines, and they were invented in Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians have built the pyramids and equipped their vertexes with special materials that can accumulate magic, trapping it and entombing inside the structure. It still escapes, but not so fast. With this magic, some smaller pyramids were even able to hover. The link between Ancient Egyptian and Central American pyramids is yet unknown, but Fringers think that there might be one.
The Soviets have modified the concept, catching magic not by one vertex, but by a series of stages of those, accumulating even more magical power.

Магические потоки подчиняются неким законам, чем-то похожим на круговорот воды в природе и на грозу, однако завязаны на цикл дня и ночи. Когда светит солнце, магия "прибивается" к земле, а стоит ему скрыться, она начинает медленно подниматься: возможно, лунный свет её немного всё-таки сдерживает. По различным объектам магические потоки "скользят", и имеют свойство проходить через самую высокую из возможных точку, что напоминает о молниях. Как конкретно это древним египтянам удалось выяснить - доподлинно неизвестно, но существуют заклинания, позволяющие наблюдать за линиями Лей, и эти заговоры были придуманы именно в древнеегипетские времена.
Древние египтяне строили пирамиды, снабжая их вершины особыми материалами, которые могли накапливать магию и как бы "ловить" её, сохраняя в здании, откуда она могла улетучиваться с очень небольшой скоростью. Благодаря этой энергии некоторые маленькие пирамиды могли даже левитировать. Связь древнеегипетских строений с пирамидами Центральной Америки всё ещё чётко не известна, но в обществе Грани верят, что она есть.
В Советском Союзе же модифицировали этот принцип: магия ловится не только через верх, но и через ещё несколько ступеней вершин, аккумулируя больше волшебной энергии.

Architecture

Seven Sisters project looks like a big tower surrounded by more towers surrounded by even more towers. They aren't identical but the main concept remains the same in all buildings. Actually, mages like living in towers precisely because of ascending magical currents that they can catch at night. The same principle works in Moscow and other cities with one of these high-rises: the ley lines connect with the outer towers, then with the inner ones, and then reach for the vertex. In some cases they also connect with additional towers if they're present. Each stage allows the building to accumulate magic, increasing the "harvest" three-fold or even four-fold.

Здания проекта Семи Сестёр похожи на башню, окружённую башнями, окружённую ещё башнями. Они не все прямо идентичны друг другу, но основная их идея сохраняется во всех. Есть причина, почему волшебники предпочитают жить именно в таких строениях, благодаря тому, что магические потоки касаются их вершин. По ночам в Москве и в других городах остатки колдовской энергии сначала устремляются в сторону внешней линии башен, потом касаются следующей, потом - устремляются к вершине. В некоторых случаях они также ещё преодолевают очередной набор башенок. На каждом этапе строение успевает аккумулировать магию, что увеличивает размер "урожая" в три-четыре раза.

History

How did the Russians of all people learn about how the Pyramids worked and decided to build structures like Seven Sisters? In late XIX - early XX centuries Russian Egyptologists were among those researching various ancient ruins and monuments. One of them, young man by the name of Mitrofan Kalachev, a pupil to a renowned archaeologist Vladimir Golenischev was a Fringer. Mitya was looking for any arcane symbols, anything that would prove some of the Fringe theories. Inside one of the pyramids he had found them, and they lead it to a secret chamber full of sarcophagi. He thought they contained more mummies, but the fact that the arcane symbols led him there prompted the young man to look for spell scrolls. He didn't find any, but he did work up the courage to open one of the sacrofagi and nearly had a heart attack, because he saw a big humanoid serpent: human body complete with snake head with a cobra hood. A real upright reptile.
Mitrofan has just experienced the biggest shock of his life, but he'd gathered himself and managed to smuggle the sarcophagus out of Egypt back to Russia. One of the remaining artifact containing a translator spell was used to communicate with the serpent. He said that he was a Thabenling, a successor race to the great old Serpentites, the founders of Egypt itself. He was a guard to the priests that decided to go into hibernation when Alexander of Macedon invaded and conquered their country. The magic contained in the pyramids sustained the Thabenling bodies for thousands of years.
Before the revolution, thirty more of these magnificent creatures were woken up and brought to Russia. A decade after the bolsheviks came in power, two of the priest awaken by the Fringers later told the Soviet scientists about the principle behind the Pyramids and how they allow for casting more powerful spells. The Thabenlings and their ancestors wanted to cover the whole Earth with these structures in order to try and stop Magical Decay, or even reverse it. The Soviet Fringers liked the idea and modified the concept, which resulted in Seven Sisters being built.
In the XX and XXI centuries there were more instances of the Thabenlings being awakened and brought to Russia. The Soviets evacuated several hundreds of them in the years between 1956 and 1969. After that, an average of 1-2 of these relics a year were awakened by their peers up until the Arab Spring in 2011.

Каким же образом русские прознали о реальных свойствах пирамид, и сумели возвести подобные строения? В конце XIX-начале XX века российские египтологи были среди тех, кто занимался раскопками и исследованием различных памятников древности. Один из них, юный Митрофан Калачёв, ученик археолога Владимира Голенищева, будучи членом Общества Грани, искал какие-либо скрытые обычному глазу секреты в одной из пирамид. Обнаружив магические знаки, Митя нашёл тайный проход в одну из комнат. Там он нашёл саркофаги, как он думал, с какими-нибудь очередными мумиями. В поисках свитков заклинаний Митрофан не выдержал и вскрыл один из контейнеров и увидел нечто, что чуть не вызвало у него сердечный приступ. Настоящий огромный змей, однако с телом как у человека. Широкий, как у кобры, капюшон, три пальца: реальные рептилии в человеческом теле.
Митрофану, пережившему самый большой страх в своей жизни, удалось тайно перевезти змея в Россию, где при помощи одного из немногих сохранившихся артефактов для перевода с пробуждённым змеем был налажен контакт. Он рассказал, что он происходит из расы сабенлингов, наследников древних великих Серпентитов, основателей Египта. Он и многие его соратники - охрана великих жрецов, что ушли в долгий сон в пирамидах, когда Александр Македонский покорил их страну. Благодаря магии, копящейся в пирамидах, сабенлинги смогли проспать тысячи лет, не потревоженные и не нуждающиеся в пище и воде.
До революции в России оказалось около трёх десятков этих чудесных существ, остальные их товарищи оставались в гибернации. Двое жрецов, пробуждённых русскими Граневиками, растолковали уже советским учёным после революции, каким образом работают пирамиды, и что при помощи них можно творить заклинания более высокой мощи, чем обычно. Их конечной целью было застроить в какой-то момент подобными пирамидами весь мир, и попытаться таким образом вернуть утекающую магию. Советские учёные взяли проект на вооружение и модифицировали его. Так появились "Семь Сестёр".
Сабенлинги же пробуждались ещё в несколько волн: кроме изначальной тридцатки, советские уже учёные пробудили несколько сотен в период с 1956 по 1969 годы, а потом постепенно выводили из сна по 1-2 змею в год вплоть до "Арабской весны" 2011 года.

So, this is the first article in this world that is distinctly Russian in spirit, but brace yourselves, there will be more! One of the Seven Sisters, the Moscow State University, is visible from the common balcony of my apartment building, and it would be wrong if there wasn't anything in the setting that was linked to these magnificent structures. The initial idea about the Seven Sisters and their copies in ex-Warsaw Pact countries belongs to my player and best friend Piros, who plays Sesostris in Vicissitudes of Time.

Это первая статья, которая отражает что-то самобытно-российское, но такие ещё будут. Одна из "Сталинских высоток", МГУ, видна с общего балкона нашего дома, и было бы неправильно не придумывать чего-либо, связанное с этими величественными зданиями, в этом сеттинге. Изначальная идея принадлежит моему игроку Пиресу, который играет Сесостриса в Превратностях Времени.
