Allurane Species in Fortuun | World Anvil

Allurane

Zashier looked around at the human city he had lived in for 50 years. Since he had come to this city it had grown a lot, and many of the friends he met back then were now leading the city towards a new era. He was proud of everything he had witnessed, and planned on doing more to help them.
Allurane are a plant based humanoid created by the Goddess of Nature, Lora. In the wild, they protect entire areas of forests, grasslands, oases, and other areas where plants flourish. Some wander around and find civilization, and sometimes civilization finds them. They get along with other races quite well, especially humans, elves, and gnomes.

Curiosity of their Surroundings

Allurane are naturally curious and seek to learn about everything they can around them. This often leads them to explore around their little area of the woods. Despite this, Allurane almost never encounter other races, and live their entire lives without ever having met another intelligent being. However, when they do meet humanoids, they are driven to learn whatever they can about them and live among them. Humans often enjoy the fellowship of something so rare, and learning from them as well. Wood elves are the most common race they find, and integrate very well into their society. Gnomes who live in the forests are also very curious about this strange new humanoid they have come across.

Hermaphrodites

Allurane are hermaphrodites, being born as both male and female, and capable of reproducing asexually or even with other races, which almost always leads to more children of the other race. Being in this unique position, Allurane in the wild often don't look like either gender, but in civilization they almost always choose to become one gender. over a period of roughly a month, Allurane go through a slow metamorphosis that changes them physically into a certain gender.

Guardians of Nature

Having been born from it, and with a strong influence from Lora, almost every Allurane has a love for nature. They rarely do harm to it, and if they must its often for the betterment of nature. Allurane who come into contact with civilization can teach them about the importance of not disturbing nature too much, and that it can heal very quickly. Take what you need from it, and give back what you can.

Vampire Allurane

Occasionally an allurane will be struck with a rare genetic disorder, known as albinism. Their skin turns a pale white, and their eyes become a crimson red. Their abilities change as their connection to the nature element is weakened, but in exchange they get the ability to feel magic. Unable to produce food and energy for themselves, they learn to take energy and nutrients from other plants they live with. While to most creatures this would be a guaranteed way of poisoning yourself, the Vampire allurane avoids this by also taking any diseases the plants they feed from would otherwise have, developing a symbiotic relationship with the plant they surround themselves with.

Underground Allurane

Below the surface world is a vast expanse of many caves and tunnels, the place where the Drow and Deep Gnomes live, and it is the last place you'd expect to find any sort of plant-based race. And while its true, normal allurane would never dare set foot anywhere near this place, the Underground Allurane have found a way. Instead of creating their own food, these allurane scavenge for food, feasting on the rotting corpses of creatures that have passed away, breaking down their remains into nutrients for themselves. These bioluminescent allurane crawl around in the dark, hoping to find a new meal.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Allurane are plants given a humanoid form, mimicking humans. They don't have bones or blood like other species, rather they use a system of water pressure and rigid structures within their body to help keep themselves upright.

Biological Traits

Often an allurane's look will reflect whatever environment they call home. If they live in a jungle, they will be big and vibrant, but if they live in plains, they will often take the color of the grasses they live near. Desert Allurane are often muted, with small spikes instead of leaves to avoid losing moisture.

Genetics and Reproduction

Allurane are asexual and can often reproduce by themselves, but they are capable of mating with other races, almost always resulting in a baby of the other race.

Growth Rate & Stages

Allurane grow incredibly quickly, and reach full maturity after 5 years. They start out as fertilized seedlings and eventually grow out from the ground, similar to how plants do, but they gain mobility by the age of 1. Beyond that, its similar to humans.

Ecology and Habitats

Allurane are capable of existing just about anywhere on the surface, other than cold tundra locations. But as long there is water and open sunlight, an allurane can thrive. Vampire Allurane might have an easier or harder time living in different locations, depending on how they can find food. Underground Allurane typically live, as their name suggests, underground, in the vast expanse below the surface world. While not technically their homeland, they can survive on the surface just fine, even if the sun is blinding to them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Allurane are capable of making their own food by absorbing sunlight and water, creating their own energy.  Vampire allurane are incapable of forming nutrients like the normal ones, but are capable of sapping them from other plants around them. Underground allurane eat the dead flesh of just about anything they can get their hands on, being bottom feeders like the mushrooms they mimic. All allurane can eat other foods to sustain themselves, enjoying either sweet and sugary foods for the surface dwelling kind, and unusual flavors, such as bitter foods for the underground variants.

Biological Cycle

Allurane tend to mimic plants when it comes to the passing of seasons. In spring, they are green with few brown spots, and the flowers on their body are budding or blooming. In summer, the flowers are in full bloom, and they are as bright as ever. In fall, they begin to grow brown spots that spread, as their flowers begin to wither. By winter, they are entirely brown with no flowers.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Allurane in the wild live alone, with no contact to sentient life. Many allurane spend their entire lives not knowing about other races entirely, and any children they do have often leave to find their own nature patches to protect once they come of age. Allurane who make their way to civilizations will often fit in as the lovable and curious oddball, especially in Human and Wood Elven cultures. They learn the structure of whatever village or city they find and find a place to fit in there.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Allurane live just about everywhere, including underground. They avoid colder regions and are usually unable to grow very large in those regions if they do get there.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Standard Allurane have no special perception skills, beyond the typical eyes that every humanoid has. Vampire Allurane do have similar seeing skills, but due to their connections with the arcana element, are capable of detecting magic with a simple touch, and more powerful specimens can even see magic on or in objects for a short amount of time. Underground Allurane have dark vision, usually out to 120 ft.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Allurane take the naming customs of whatever race they encounter, but often don't have names in the wild.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Every allurane knows Sylvan, as this is the language the plants speak.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Allurane are curious creatures, and typically have an open mind when it comes to meeting other races. Their views on a particular race may be shaped by the environment they live in, such as how wood elves are often a little wary of humans.
Lifespan
300 years
Average Height
about 5 ft. or 152 cm.
Average Weight
roughly 150 lbs. or 68 kg.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Surface allurane are typically various shades of green, being mostly uniform throughout their entire body. The leaves or vines they use for their hair may be a diffrent color, but is usually uniform as well. The leaves they use for their "clothing" may change color to suit the alluranes tastes, and are generally vibrant colors. Vampire allurane are pure white, and are usually unable to muster much if any color within themselves. Underground allurane are many diffrent colors, and can be almost anything from a soft beige to a vibrant blue. Some of them have many markings that surround them, like mushrooms. These markings can emit a soft glow, spreading light in the otherwise dark ridden tunnels of the underground.

Nice concept for a humanoid race. I also like how you included the stats so others can use it :) I still have a few question though. Do they look exactly like other humanoids but with other skin or are there certain defining features that sets them apart? Also kan an allurane that moves to a new habitat change its form to adapt to the new habitat?   Starting an article with a little story section is nice but you can use the quote BBcode to make this standout. You could also use bigger headers in the first section of the text so that it matches the later sections. In all nice read :)

Nice article! Great prose at the beginning, it helps set the tone very well :) I also enjoy the inclusion of stats - as a GM myself for DnD this is quite useful. I might even inspire myself from them for my own plants - if this is ok with you of course ^^!

This is an interesting species, nice article!   Here are a few notes I took while reading:   " Wood elves are the moot common race they find" you have a typo at "most"   " This almost always leads to more children of the other race." I'm not sure what you mean here. That mixed couples have more children together than members of the other race typically have? Or that most of the children are not mix but completely of the other race? – Ah I see that you clarify that later in the reproduction section. However, I think you can also make this sentence clearer too.   " They rarely do harm to it, and if they must its often for the betterment of nature." Could you add a concrete example of that? You can even use a quote for that and write about an in-world event.   You talk about the Allurane's relationships with other civilisation but not about their own society. Do they live together in group? Live separately but occasionally meet? Not meet at all? What is their society like?   I'm also wondering if the other races know about Alluranes at all before meeting them? OR would people be confused about what they are?

I second the curiosity about Allurane society. And these sound like a nice playable race!

Hey LinkMasterTime! Nice creation of a playable race, and I appreciate the inclusion of some stats to work with. I really wish there was an art piece showing the different appearances the Allurane based on their biome (I just think it'd be cool haha). One thing you may want to consider, especially if you're planning on writing a one shot for adventure April, is how to use Wizard's of the Coast Open Gaming License so you can legally use 5e rulesets, spell descriptions, etc. while making your own content. I've included a couple links below for you fit that's something you want to look into. Great work!   https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/systems-reference-document-srd https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/blogs/news/how-to-use-the-open-game-license
