Professor Gritch was gone. The warm rain of late summer poured down in sheets. The party piled into their van and drove on. They considered a detour to explore the area but thought better of it. They were still in The Capitol, and they have been warned not only of the Capitol army and the Correctors, but also roving gangs of bandits. They came to Diamond Island, a marshy islet which divided the Ohio River in a fork. At the head of that fork, located in the rubble of a pre-war town whose name had been forgotten, was the Diamond Island Ferry. They took a safe vantage overlooking the area. They could see the small ferry, large enough for a pair of vehicles and a few dozen passengers. An unguarded ferryboat captain sat on the dock in a hazmat suit, waiting for fares. Just a short walk away, taking advantage of the traffic, was a small blacksmith shop.
The group entered the shop. They had traded for a counterfeit Capitol merchant’s license with a chem dealer named Chance. It was intended for this blacksmith, a human man named Kamal. They offered Kamal the license, and he was disappointed to find that there were errors in the forging. With a Capitol merchant’s license and corresponding citizenship papers, Kamal could declare that the party were his “caravan guests” and they could take the Diamond Island Ferry. But without it, the group would be caught having no citizenship papers within The Capitol, and there would probably be violence. So, they set to correcting Kamal’s license, taking great pains to make it perfect. It took an hour of work, but they felt they had something workable.
After trading a few items with Kamal, they had a deal that he would help them across and pay them some cash. The ferryboat captain accepted the papers with disinterest. The party and their van were safely across the Ohio River and they could continue their journey. They looked to the map and saw the village of Posey. There would be the Correctors police force there, as well as hundreds of Capitol citizens fanatically loyal to Great Leader. But there also could be medicine, information, or other assets. They decided it was probably worth it and headed there, parking and hiding the van just outside of town.
Hesitant to march right into a village in a fascist state for which they had no citizenship papers, they decided to explore a ruined area off to one side. A recon revealed an NCR fireteam taking a rest from some injuries. With them was a single Brotherhood of Steel Lancer (pilot.) The party were shocked at the sight of the Brotherhood of Steel assisting the invasion of Dixie, thinking that there might be some conspiracy within the Midwest. But a closer look revealed that the Lancer was from the West Coast chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel, a California group, mostly independent of the Midwest. Lex and Morag took up sniper positions in the ruins. Arminius approached the group.
The Californians were friendly and casual, explaining that they had been in a truck headed for the invasion. The Inquisitors of the Children of Atom religion owned this truck and shared the ride with them. Their West Coast Brotherhood Lancer had expressed concern about their fission-powered vehicle, but the Inquisitors had assured them that it would be fine. It was not fine. There had been a leak which had injured many of the passengers. The Inquisitors, sitting in the back of the truck had gotten the worst of it. Their Inquisitor Prosperine was still at the local medical station in critical condition, but his colleagues had taken the truck had headed back to Holy Toledo without him. These NCR elites and their Lancer were just resting up. Soon they would head south and join in the invasion of Dixie.
Arminius gave a hand signal to the party to start their ambush. He then pretended to be surprised by the resulting attack. Morag and Lex made quick work of the NCR’s leader with precise rifle shots. Linda, in a furor against the Inquisitors and their collaborators, entered her Atomic Storm fervour and hurled herself at the soldiers. Andy fisted many faces. Arminius, having tricked the NCR elites, was able to keep the element of surprise and attack with his pistols.
The Brotherhood Lancer was shocked by the attack. They were a hundred miles from the front. He took cover, hoping his NCR companions would protect them. When most of them were down, he panicked. The Lancer drew a nuka-grenade from his coat and tossed it into the fight. It landed close to Arminius and exploded in a radioactive cloud. The former legionary was badly burned and fell to the ground unconscious, hovering on the edge of death. Andy the SchlockettBot came to Arminius’s aid, reviving him with a stimpak.
Things got even worse when Linda collapsed to the ground. In her Atomic Storm she hadn’t noticed how many times the NCR soldiers had shot her with their new Destiny Rifles. Lex climbed down from her shooting spot and assisted Linda. The Lancer fled, running back toward the village. Morag took aim and tried to disable the pilot’s legs. She and Beau successfully stopped the Lancer from running – by killing him.
The party looked off to Posey. They had made a lot of noise, but there didn’t seem to be any response coming from the village. They searched the dead Californians, loading their gear into the hidden van. Cleaned up and somewhat healed, they headed to Posey’s commercial station.
With some credits and trade items, the group were able to procure some stimpaks, though it took bribing a merchant. As they shopped, Morag noticed a familiar face. It was Hyatt Colby, the middle of the Colby brothers – rival hunters from Tennessee. Hyatt greeted Morag with an apology. He and his brothers had assumed that Morag had no connection to the people she was guiding. Morag had been a fixture of the Hatchie Forest for the last thirty years and had been famously unsociable. When a bounty hunter had come with promises of Legion gold, for nothing more than pointing out one of their own legionaries, the Colby family had jumped at the chance. Counting his chickens before they hatched, their patriarch Gus Colby had taken out a big loan from the Inquisitors.
Hyatt was here in Posey to talk to the Inquisitors to ask for more time to repay the debt, but they had arrived injured and most of them had left. Only Inquisitor Prosperine was left in town, recovering in the medical station. Hyatt was afraid to leave town until he could either talk to the Inquisitor, or he died. He suggested that Morag might help him out. She might make sure that Prosperine never recovered. Morag said that she was amenable but had to be careful in this place.
They had some supplies and a van with fuel, but they were still tired and hurt from their fight. The village had a lodging station, a place where Great Leader’s citizens could rent a room. With Hyatt Colby visiting with an invitation from the Inquisitors, the group were able to book. They paid up and took an easy evening before a night’s rest…
