(Adventure Day 119)
The party wandered into NOLA by morning light, finally free from Caesar's Legion. They had been told by Tameka that they could get help at the Bourbon Street Clinic. And they did find free soup and lodging in the clinic, offered for free by the people of Dixie for two weeks. They had a good rest in shared barracks and awoke to face this strange city.
With gear looted from defeated Legionaries and the money given to them by Tameka, the party took time to visit the local market, stocking up on weapons and clean clothing.
Lex knew that her mentor, Professor Gritch was at Kentucky Dam, repairing it for the Dixie government. That dam was 600 miles away, but that still made Gritch her closest contact. They discovered that Dixie had reconstructed some pre-war railroad lines. These trains were primarily for the defence of the nation against invaders from Caesar's Legion or The Capitol. But there hadn't been a war in twenty years, the trains mostly carried freight and paying passengers. The party dropped by the local train station and were shocked to find that each seat on the train cost 80 Dixie Dollars just to get to Jax. To get all the way up to Kentucky would cost 120 Dixie Dollars a seat. For the three of them, that was over 700 Caps. They had less than 50 caps between them.
Looking to make some money, the group approached the city's Sheriff, a woman named Lambert. She offered the party a reward if they could investigate a strange criminal case. A strange foreigner, a man from the Midwest Brotherhood of Steel (like Lex and Linda), had been caught trying to sell UltraJet at the French Market. A merchant named Enora had reported it. The party had to travel the city to investigate. It took charming many people, but they uncovered that a MerchantBot from Detroit had tried to sell the UltraJet in question weeks before. The chems had been seized by the sheriff and then donated to the Followers of the Apocalypse charity hospital. At some point, Morris must have stolen the chems from the Followers and then tried to sell them, all of it very clumsily.
Confronting Morris with the facts, he broke down and admitted that he was trying to be put in prison. He had been raised in St. Louis, where the Brotherhood taught him to cook synthetic rubber. He had been convinced by propaganda to volunteer his services in The Capitol. In The Capitol, Morris discovered a vicious and totalitarian state. And his rubber production wasn't being used to make helpful products for common people. It was being used to refurbish pre-war military vehicles. He was convinced that The Capitol was much more dangerous than most believed. He wanted to be locked in a prison in Dixie, where The Capitol wouldn't suspect him, were they ever to conquer these lands. The party agreed to keep Morris's secret and in turn, he said enough to Sheriff Lambert to earn them their reward.
Exploring the city, the party entered the Voodoo Authentica candle shop and encountered a strange man named Eshu. This man offered them a selection of strange candles, each associated with a spirit of the Vodun religion. They brought Eshu gifts of alcohol and candy. In exchange, he gave them a prophecy, announcing, "We all know a cold wind comes from the East, but now the West comes with him. Best you keep that eye tat watches, look into the heart of every man who calls himself friend."
Hearing that the Followers of the Apocalypse were offering a reward for its investigation, the party descended into Vault 151. At the entrance, they found a ghoulified vault dweller named Chip. He claimed to travel from vault to vault, salvaging what he could. He wanted to scavenge from 151, but the turrets and robotic defences were still active. The party assured him that they could handle the danger and went deeper into the vault.
