Magdud, Murob, and Murzush

The Sentinel Sisters

To the southeast of Lurkshome, the remote and forbidding Sentinel Sisters rise from the Glass Ocean. The three islands—Magdud, Murob, and Murzush—are rugged, mountainous, and perilously isolated. Their jagged crags extend far into the surrounding waters, forming treacherous reefs that have claimed countless ships over the centuries. These islands remain virtually untouched by naturalists or explorers, as few dare approach their inhospitable shores.

Magdud (The Northern Sister)

The largest of the three islands, Magdud looms over the horizon with jagged peaks that rise higher and more dramatically than its southern counterparts. Its coastline is an impenetrable maze of cliffs and razor-sharp rock formations, making landfall nearly impossible.

Key Features:

  • Seabird Haven: Massive colonies of seabirds, including storm petrels, razorbeak gulls, and the rare Cragshear Albatross, thrive on Magdud’s cliffs. Their cries echo eerily across the island.
  • Unique Flora: Hardy plants such as saltbrush and cliff ivy cling to the rock faces, while the inland slopes are dotted with sparse shrubs and mosses.
  • Remote Isolation: Even seasoned sailors and adventurers avoid Magdud’s perilous waters, where jagged undersea crags have claimed many a ship.

Magdud’s size and ruggedness make it the most inhospitable of the three islands, a towering monument to the untamed wild.

Murob (The Middle Sister)

Positioned between its siblings, Murob is smaller than Magdud but no less treacherous. Its craggy peaks, though slightly less imposing, are equally forbidding, and its waters are littered with sharp rock outcrops hidden beneath the waves.

Key Features:

  • Mountain Wildlife: Creatures such as the Shiftscale Lizard, with its iridescent camouflage, and the Thunderhorn Goat, known for scaling impossible heights, have adapted to Murob’s rocky terrain.
  • Seabird Colonies: Murob’s cliffs host smaller yet vibrant colonies of seabirds, including Skydiver Hawks, agile predators that hunt fish in the turbulent surrounding seas.
  • Highland Flora: Stunted trees and hardy grasses populate the highlands, with pockets of sheltered vegetation providing rare bursts of greenery.

Murob is slightly more approachable than Magdud but remains an unyielding place where nature reigns supreme.

Murzush (The Southern Sister)

The smallest of the three islands, Murzush is one-quarter the size of Magdud. While its peaks are lower, they are no less jagged, and the surrounding waters are just as hazardous. Its smaller scale does little to diminish its wild, untamed character, and its treacherous underwater crags deter even the most daring sailors.

Key Features:

  • Geological Ruggedness: Murzush’s rocky landscape is a labyrinth of cliffs and crags, shaped by eons of relentless wind and sea erosion.
  • Unique Avians: The Rockstrider Crane, a ground-nesting bird with ash-coloured plumage, thrives on Murzush’s rocky terrain.
  • Sparse Wildlife: Smaller species, such as hardy rodents and cliff-dwelling insects, populate the island alongside seabirds nesting on its lower cliffs.

Murzush may lack the grandeur of Magdud and Murob, but its isolation and rugged terrain make it no less wild or unwelcoming.

A Triad of Untouched Wilderness

The Sentinel Sisters—Magdud, Murob, and Murzush—are united by their stark beauty and unyielding isolation. With no volcanic activity, their jagged mountains have been shaped solely by time, weather, and the ceaseless battering of the ocean. These islands remain largely unexplored, fostering ecosystems of unique seabirds, mountain creatures, and hardy flora. For the daring few who risk the journey, the Sentinels stand as untamed monuments to the raw power of nature—a realm where only the sea and sky bear witness.
