Midpoint
Situated northwest of Mid Port and nestled within Cruentum’s lower quarter, Midpoint is a land of quiet prosperity and pastoral beauty. It earned its name during Cruentum’s early expansion, serving as the midway point between South Port and Northwatch—a critical link when the fledgling human population controlled only the southernmost quarter of the island. Since then, as peace and expansion have taken root, Midpoint has flourished, marking the symbolic centre of what is now human-controlled territory that stretches across half the island.
Fields and Pastures
The land around Midpoint has been transformed into an expansive patchwork of farms, meadows, and pastures, carved out of the dense forests over generations. Once wild and untamed, this fertile region now produces much of Cruentum’s food supply, with fields of grain, vegetables, and livestock pastures dominating the landscape. Small, family-run homesteads dot the countryside, surrounded by low practical stone walls.
The meadows are a riot of colour in the spring, with wildflowers blooming between grazing sheep and cattle. The air carries the rich scent of tilled earth and hay, a far cry from the salt spray of the coast. This is the breadbasket of Cruentum, where the labour of farmers feeds not only Midpoint but the great port cities of Arastmith and South Port.
A Bustling Market Town
At the heart of the region is Midpoint Town, a vibrant and industrious settlement that serves as the hub for trade and life in the human heartland. The central market square is the town’s beating heart, bustling with farmers, traders, and craftspeople hawking goods from wagons and stalls. Barrels of salted pork, sacks of flour, fine wool, and local cheeses are among the many offerings that find their way south to the cities.
Small workshops line the streets—blacksmiths, wheelwrights, and carpenters crafting tools, wagons, and goods essential to frontier life. Inns like The Wayfarer’s Hearth and taverns such as The Midway Tankard cater to travellers and traders, offering hearty meals and warm beds to those journeying deeper into Cruentum.
A Growing Territory
Midpoint’s significance goes beyond its role as a market town. It is a symbol of human expansion. Once the edge of civilization when the Cruentae controlled only the southern quarter of the island, it now sits comfortably within the southern half of the land controlled by humans and their allies. The cleared farmland continues to grow northward as families and settlers push the boundaries of the forest, though pockets of wild-lands remain.
The Spirit of Midpoint
Midpoint represents the ambition and resilience of the Cruentae settlers. Where dense forests once loomed, they have built farms, homes, and thriving trade. The pride of its people is evident in their work: fields tended with care, goods crafted with skill, and a town that hums with quiet prosperity.
For travellers, Midpoint offers a sense of calm and stability—a reprieve between the bustling cities of Arastmith and South Port and the unknown dangers further north. For its inhabitants, it is home: the green heart of Cruentum, where the past’s hard-won peace has blossomed into a land of promise and plenty.
