Sir / Dame

"Parting, with the hurried shuffling of many a greave, the steed rode through. Bearing arms and bearing banners he did, the noblest of steeds was the prize of the Imperial cavalry; Conquerer. Those who stood against flinched and those who ruled the broken shrunk as the Sir made his announcement atop Conquerer. The Velians were to flee.

And flee they did."
— A Force of Glory
Knighthood is granted through a grand ceremony in which the knight in question bows before their bestower. A blade is rested against each of the knight's shoulders to represent the submission of authority.   There are three main 'tiers' of knighthood, though the term is usually quite flexible:   * Lordly knights are the lowest form, being able to be granted by anyone of lordly noble status or higher, provided they are part of the lowvire political structure. Lordly knights are usually responsible for an overseeing role in a town's guardsmanship and the direct defence of their vassal. * Knights of Honour are notable folk who have done an incredible deed in the eyes of an imperial Sovereign or Viceroy. Knights of honour, though having an elevated position in the imperial military, have a mostly ceremonial role, parading the empire's pride around the lands with their fame. They are mainly called upon when a specific problem requires attention. * Crown Knights are the highest form of knight aside from very special crown knights (see below). Crown knights are people of repute or fame that have been seen as valuable to the Emperor of the empire his/herself. Knighted before the emperor, these lucky folk take orders directly from the highest of lowire nobles and are not expected to take anyone else's word, not even grand princes.   A subset of crown knights are the Knights of the Round. In the empire, the knights of the round are incredibly special, skilled and as a result, famous people who are directly responsible for the personal safety of the emperor and his direct family.
