Larry Tinkle

Background

Larry and his brother, Terry Tinkle, grew up under the close care and tutelage of their parents, guiding them towards becoming unique and subtle young men. Whilst they kept the unique, they certainly lost the latter and still managed to grift and glom their way to modest riches, which they blew just as fast as they made, their parents couldn’t have been prouder. Mum and dad, Glenda Tinkle and Derek Findler, also had a colourful past and ended up running a fence tavern called the bolt and key. Larry hails from Greymourne, a town to the north west of the county of Thrantium, in the shadow of the northern ranges of the Pink mountains. Its stone walls protect it from the swampland to the north and north east and gates lead to the open plains that stretch south and south west of the town, this is where Larry’s story really begins, at a fair settled on the plains, the ancient traveling Lintoll.   Larry and Terry enter into the colourful grounds of the Lintoll’s temporary grounds, tents stretching high around them and the scent of sweet sweet gold on the air. People love the “Lintoll” for its exotic goods, superb performances and large number of games and tournaments held. The twins are here to fleece and fool the lot, and without a penny to their names on entry they move on the first mark.   After plenty of chaos a little slip up may or may not have caused them to do a bit of a runner, little did they know it was probably the worst mistake they ever made. In the chaos of the following battle a magic item became displaced from a shelf, an explosion engulfed the tent and Larry fell into unconsciousness, worrying for the hefty pile of gold in his pockets.   Waking up Larry came over to his brother to tell him “mumma’s gunna kill us for real this time Terry”. Then, from the shadows of another cell, a stranger in a patchwork cloak offers aid to the poor halflings; a drink, a ring, and a smile.   When we next join Larry and his brother they are in Qarton following a bound trail towards their inevitable fate, each with a magic ring but one infinitely more powerful and dangerous than the other.

Education and Employment

Larry was educated by his parents, Glenda Tinkle and Derek Findler. They taught him many things, lots of them normal but with strange methods. Larry learned maths due to the accounting required to fence materials and launder money through a business. He learned to read both common and thieves' cant at the same time. His parents taught him manners in order to get close enough to someone to slice their purse. Larry was also taught more... unique talents: how to open a lock that ought not to be opened; how to sneak around and make yourself unrecognisable; how to leap from rooftop to rooftop and elude capture. Larry worked in the Bolt and Key most of his life from childhood. It was only later on that he stopped serving tankards of ale and listening in on furtive deals, once he and his brother were able to steal a living of their own. Glenda and Derek couldn't be prouder.

Appearance

Larry looks identical to his twin brother Terry (although he'll tell you that he's better looking). Small halfling features, with a cheeky grin, nimble fingers, red hair and heterochromatic eyes; one gold, one blue (the opposite of his brother's and one of the few ways to tell them apart). Clad in his custom leather armour, which is covered with small pockets and pouches to hide away coins and trinkets, Larry has a quiver and shortbow slung across his back, courtesy of Jackob. It also goes almost without mentioning that he carries his two most treasured possessions, his thieves tools and prestidigitation ring, with him at all times.

Personality

Motivation

Larry has, ever since he was an even littler halfling, wanted to become the best thief in all of Everon and to set up a chain of fence front taverns across all of Viseria with his *ahem* acquired wealth. However, since all this fey malarkey has begun, he's starting to realise that he needs the world to still exist in order to make money off of it. Also, his brother Terry is in deep and needs protecting... maybe even saving?

Savvies and Ineptitudes

Larry is nimble and has worked effortlessly at his lockpicking and thieving skills. He's getting pretty good with a bow too, now that you mention it. However, he's not all that wise and doesn't think of the consequences of his actions...ever.

Likes and Dislikes

Larry likes money. Larry also likes shiny things. Larry especially likes shiny things that can be sold for money. Did I mention money?   Larry is dedicated to his twin brother and his family. Although he wouldn't admit it, he's beginning to care deeply for the bonk squad, even Vyth  Larry dislikes those that upset the natural order of things. Not without scruples he hates people who take from those that can't afford. Larry is scared of water and drowning after his and Knor Ti's incident.

Virtues and personality perks

Loyalty, hidden conscience and affection, humour, free spiritedness.

Vices and personality flaws

Greed, kleptomania, unthinking.

Personality quirks

Larry will steal anything and everything given the chance. He's also a big fan of pranks and making fun of certain dragonborn paladins.

Hygiene

Larry keeps himself pretty clean, as Pops always used to say, guard dogs can sniff you out if you haven't washed right before a job. It's sort of like your lockpicks: keep them clean and let them sheen.

Social

Larry Tinkle from the town of Greymourne, reliever of financial burdens was born in Greymourne to Glenda Tinkle and Derek Findler. Along with his twin brother Terry he was raised and trained to inherit some of his parents' particular skills, interests and hobbies. Being brought up in a fence tavern like the bolt and key certainly gives you some surprising insights at an early age. Larry is friendly enough and will happily chat with people, just like he used to at the tavern. Quick to make a jab or joke and to lift a few coins and lighten your purse, Larry is both a blessing and a curse to have as a friend. However, if you reach his inner circle then he'll follow you to the ends of the earth.

Religious Views

Larry is aware of the gods and knows well enough not to get on their bad side. He's dabbled in minor worship of thieving deities such as Mask, but none of them have really stuck. What Larry truly believes in is fate and luck. They're always there and assisted by skill, but chance has served him and every other thief in the Tinkle family well thus far. Even gods must bow to fate and luck, so why worship what's less powerful?    Larry does hold a soft spot for the tales of Brandobaris that he was told growing up.

Family ties

  • Glenda Tinkle - Mother Very motherly disposition but piss her off and she's one of the best heavy crossbowmen in the region. Drawn from an assassin’s life towards much more respectable thievery when she ran into her husband Derek Findler. Loves her kids, cooking pies, and watching the light leave her enemies eyes. Now co-owner of the Bolt and Key with her lovely husband.
  • Derek Findler - Father Simple dad who has developed a thrill for a chase, once a small-town locksmith who was dragged into the wrong job for the local guild. The job went south of course and all his team was impaled with crossbow bolts, but Derek ran picking and locking doors as fast as the assassin could chase him, after a whole night of busting nearly every door in the city down the assassin confronted him, impressed with his skill and keen to work with him… further, they paired quite nicely. Now co-owning a little tavern in the backstreets of Greymourne, the Bolt and Key.
  • Terry Tinkle - Brother
