Skaldoran

The last of the human migrations to Illiria, Skaldorans come from a forgotten land only described as vast, windy, and easily conquered. It was the Skaldorans who united the different human groups and their allies against Elvenkind and formed the First Empire, starting a new era.

Naming Traditions

Family names

While a majority of common folk keep their names simple, often after an accomplishment, noble Skaldorans are often proud to use their ancestral surnames. These include Gantulga, Nergüi, Batjargal, and Skalxien, who are the loyal family.

Skaldorans that are raised among only others of their kind are often hospitable to other humans, especially other Skaldorans, but unfriendly to those they see as "others". They carry a sense of pride about being the source of the biggest empire in the world.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Traditionally, Skaldorans leave offerings of food and burning incense for their ancestors, though this practice is less common nowadays. They do still almost universally burn the dead, believing that the spirit cannot reach whatever afterlife it is meant for if it is not turned to smoke.

Common Taboos

Due to the belief that spirits must be "released" to the sky after death, Skaldorans refuse to be buried after death. Anything short of cremation is considered to be trapping the spirit in the material world, doomed to haunt it's loved ones forever.
