Attinae, Goddess of Monsters
"She is the spider on the wall. She is the sensation of pain. She is the Dark Mother, and she will have your respect." -Janil the Red, Priestess of Attinae.
Often referred to as the Mother of Monsters or The Lady of Pain, Attinae is the goddess of dark things. Pain. Suffering. Monstrous ends. She is also, however, the goddess of portals. She is somewhat widely worshiped among the monstrous races of Illiria, heralded as a caring mother. Her humanoid followers often believe that she is the path to true enlightenment that can only be brought about by transcending pain.
Divine Domains
Attinae presides over the domains of Fire, Law, Evil, Vermin, and Madness. She is the goddess of monsters, insanity, portals, and the evils between Hell and The Abyss.
Holy Books & Codes
The Gift of Pain is the most sacred text of The Cult. It is kept secret from outsiders but is generally known to be full of intricate torture methods designed to bring followers closer to True Enlightenment.
"There comes a point during the flaying, when the body has been pushed to the outer edges of limitations and the soul has been purged of any semblance of hope, that the victim is attuned to all things. They are aware of True Existence, and this is a gift from the Dark Mother. She who is all and will become all. The real trouble is getting the victim to live long enough to impart the Lady's wisdom."- The Gift of Pain, from the chapter Edge of Insanity.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
Cultists identify each other with burning book pendants. The Duchess holds the flail as a sacred weapon and the basilisk is said to be her most favored of creatures.
Tenets of Faith
- Only through pain can one understand the true state of existence
- Death brought by monstrous means is a divine blessing.
- The Cult is the only thing, keep it safe from outsiders
- Our dead are to be burned
Holidays
Terror is the fifth day of Portum, in which men don the masks of monsters and pull pranks (typically harmless) on the other people in the settlement. The masked men are usually traveling performers paid by small villages or a dedicated society of them in larger cities. One of the masked men is given a different colored mask, and he hands out sweets to children. One of the masked men is The Devil, who must be “banished” by the sweets man by the end of the day. In larger cities, The Devil often wins, while in smaller settlements it is sometimes the practice that the Sweets Man and The Devil pretend to be normal citizens (designated in secret ahead of time) who must try to figure out who the other is.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
The Lady of Pain wants to merge all realms into one. Until then, she is content with inflicting suffering and releasing the occasional monstrosity.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Attinae resembles a human woman aside from her frightening coloration. She is said to appear middle aged and seductive when she chooses to disguise herself as a mortal.
Body Features
Attinae's skin seems to writhe and crawl as if something is moving underneath it. Every hour or so, one of these marks bursts and thousands of spiders, ticks, or wasps spill out of her.
Apparel & Accessories
The Lady of Pain wears a tattered dress stained red with the blood of her followers. It is secured to her body with long, barbed needles.
Social
Family Ties
Though the daughter of Fortissimus, Attinae despises her holy father and revels in seducing his worshipers away from his teachings. Her mother was the dead goddess Kiaru, and the Dark Mother actually finds the fact that Rhyddid replaced Kiaru absolutely hilarious.
Attinae is wed to her brother Ku'Qala, whose influence tempers the more chaotic aspects of the Lady of Pain. The two want nothing to do with the other, but it was a marriage of necessity- Ku'Qala imprisons the worst of his wife, thus controlling her chaos, and Attinae uses the essence of the Hell God to create particularly gruesome creatures.
Speech
The Mother of Monsters speaks in three alternating voices: a frightened child, a screaming woman, and a laughing madman.
