Sidewalls

Written by Etoilebane

A variety of metal structures dot the inside of the dome. Metal walkways, ladders, ramps, rails and astoundingly, slides connect the lumps of metal protruding from the dome's interior. Small groupings of the shacks cluster together into to crude apartment complexs.

Purpose / Function

To provide economical housing while maximising the available space within the domes of Ayun-Ausralia.
An informal series of contests are organized to produce the ugliest, most innovative, or most connected to other structures.

Alterations

Most Sidewall houses have additional rivets and sheeting installed, along with insulation and other creature comforts. Some have been modified into observation stations for the interior of the dome or into meeting halls.

Architecture

No observable architectural style can be observed in the sidewalls, with a large number of them being assembled from either preformed buildings adhered to the interior wall of the dome. Other examples of sidewalls appear to be corrugated metal panels riveted together to form a rough tenement.

Shacks are assembled and/or attached to the walls of the dome using either a series of rivets or cold-welding. Pock marks and torn metal line sites where sidewall construction either failed or exceeded the durability of the materials.

History

During the early resettlement period of Ayun-Ausralia, the fabricated apartments and housing complexs installed by The Federation of Free Planets were more than ample to fufill the housing needs of the planet. As the pre-fabrications fell into dissuse and the population of exceeded intial projections, more housing was needed. One engineer proposed 'We should just stick huts to the walls of the dome' and Sidewalls were born. Six months later, rivets were considered instead of different adhesives.
