Flechette Pistol Item in Ethnis | World Anvil

Flechette Pistol

Also known as chain pistols, clippies, and needle guns, Flechette Pistols are cheaply printed pneumatic sidearms which caseless metal-and-polymer bolts.

They are effective at incapacitating unarmored personnel, but shatter uselessly against even cheap armor. Flechette wounds easily become infected by the shattered filaments and toxic polymer. They are a popular option for short-range civilian combat — typically gangs, raiders, and the colonists who have to deal with them.

Construction

Flechette are printed as a 75 x 50 x 24mm brick of 60 individual rounds connected by a fragile clip chain of filaments. Each each flechette is a 5cm, 16 Gauge spike made of tiny metal fibers within a polymer coating. The small form factor means that mag itself rarely requires reloading, however, each shot a portion of compressed air.

Hahhaah I would say the same thing I said to Barron! Great structure on the article and I love to see ready made equipment on Ethnis! In addition - I LOVE the use of "POINT" for the Flechette ... it sure is!

Thank you! We worked on them side-by-side! His deep knowledge of guns helped make the articles real, and we asked each other lots of questions to keep the content relevant, good, and accurate. By the time we were done I was able to end up on this template for future weapons, though in retrospect I forgot the section that explains how to craft it all... in the next iteration, perhaps XD

I always pronounce this "Flesh-ette" in my head, which makes for a particularly evocative image when paired with your descriptions here.

You made me go look it up because I thought it was flesh-ette too! Though I'm not sure flay-shet is much kinder sounding!

What was the reasoning behind spelling it that way? Flechette v. *flachette ?

I think I made an error somewhere and never caught it. Thank you for catching that! I'll fix the mistake after the article traffic dies down, in case doing so kills the link.

Not at all... I felt like a total pedant, but thought there might have been an in-universe reason. As it is derived from French and an /e/ sound in IPA (it is originally _fléchette en français_), "a" seems a better choice for the Anglicism anyway.

Oh I wish that had been the reason! There are other parts of the setting which demonstrate the linguistic drift which has happened in the 1800 years between the modern day and Ethnis, but this is purely a case of me forgetting to run a spellcheck!

Treat it as a happy option for such drift. Although as an etymology nerd, maybe go for a simplified spelling and regular consonantal shift. Something like: *blesheth or *bletcheth or *bletchedh Using the tropes of Grimm's Law.
