Thanos Aeson Liam Character in Etherium | World Anvil

Thanos Aeson Liam (than-ohs ay-son lee-am)

Thanos Aeson Liam

Once undeniably a villain, Thanos has been redeemed thanks to Reid. An Etherborn like many, he faces his destiny with indifference, only going where he must because he knows what's right - and because he follows his loves.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Very healthy, Thanos keeps in peak condition, fed well-rounded meals by Reid or Sholto every day. He also trains regularly with them to keep his skills from degrading.

Identifying Characteristics

Three claw mark scars over his left eye. They were from a fight with a demon in his early years as a soldier, which blinded him in that eye, but after becoming the Verith, his vision was restored. Even though he could, he has chosen to never remove those scars, keeping them as one of the few reminders of his origins and the threats that are always waiting just behind the veil.

Special abilities

Having been fundamentally altered by the powers of the Verith, he still retains many of the related capabilities even though he is now mortal. He can do short-range "blink" teleportation, biomancy, healing, and has near-equal control over all elements, barring demonic, death, and holy, with an affinity for fire and darkness. He is also highly resistant to heat, and will not suffer from heat exhaustion or sickness unless temperatures rise well beyond what is natural - that being 170°F or more.   He is an alpha psychic, with equal abilities in all schools, although he lacks the same finesse that either Alberic or Sholto have. He also lacks much of Alberic's creativity.   The combination of being a master arcanist and psychic makes him a master psycanist.

Apparel & Accessories

Has a thing for dark, soft vests, often sturdy silk or leather. His typical garb consists of muted greens, blacks, reds, and blues, with cotton or linen pants depending on the weather, leather zip-up boots, and v-neck shirts that have some lacing.

Specialized Equipment

A pair of twin falchions, both enhanced for psychic resonance. They have an HF feature as backup, in case Thanos enters a psionic dead zone for whatever reason.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Born in Néa Elláda (New Greece) in 19309 NT, Aeson had a relatively normal life growing up, and joined the army at the age of 18. His country entered a war with [enemy country] in 19314 NT, when he was 23, and they lost after only six months. Aeson was held as a prisoner by the enemy, and later enslaved, where he experienced almost nonstop hardship and trauma up till the age of 30.   Having fallen in love with a woman named Esalia, who was a slave like himself, was thought to be a silver lining, but when it turned out she was with his child, their masters separated them, and then killed her when she tried to escape. Almost simultaneously, the power of the Verith found and entered Aeson.   Wrought with grief and anger, Aeson lashed out at those who claimed ownership of his life, slaying them all in a flash of blinding power. Afterwards, he fought to free everyone he could, and killed all who stood in his way - then rendered immortal, he had the power to do so. Afterwards, Aeson and those he freed were able to return to their home country, though it wasn't without a few more fights on the way.   Though peace reigned for some time, with Aeson acting as primary defender of Néa Elláda from all threats, he was wracked with grief and unaddressed PTSD. Unstable, he was difficult for anyone to deal with, though he tried to do the right thing.   Years later, a new love entered his life, a young man by the name of Kostis. Wary at first, not wanting to lose this one, too, Aeson kept Kostis at arm's length, but Kostis worked his way closer over time, and eventually Aeson stopped resisting. They lived together in peace and joy for some years, but it was not to last.   There was a reason the previous Verith died.   The Fasar eventually found Aeson and Kostis, and believing the Verith to be the source of all evil in the world, had made it her mission to either destroy every Verith or control them. When she found Aeson would not bend to her will, she slew Kostis, truly believing that it was a mercy to end his life rather than allow him to continue to live with evil. Afterwards, she attacked Aeson, who, once more wracked with grief, fought back with everything he had.   The fight dragged on for days, to say nothing of the collateral damage. The city around them crumbled, and innocent people were caught in the crossfire. Finally, however, Aeson won, his Verith-given sword in the Fasar's heart. But he wasn't done. Seeing the destruction around him, and knowing he'd lost yet another love, he realized he had nothing left. A darkness washed over him, and he made a silent vow to destroy every Fasar, so that they could never again take anything away from him.   In 19349 NT is when that began. He carelessly carved a path of destruction out to reach every Fasar who came into existence, caring not for those around him. In a world that had shown time and again that it cared little for him, why should he care for it, after all? For three years this went on, and in his madness for aimless vengeance, he terrorized multiple countries into submitting to him, while others fell to his power.   During 19350 NT is when he made the first vampire. Having collected a following of zealots who believed in his cause, for whatever reasons, he typically treated them with indifference. However, one man, Giltera, begged Aeson for power so that he could better serve him. He begged for a long time, until finally Aeson caved, and, after putting a little thought into powers so vast even he didn't understand them all, carved a piece out and embedded it into Giltera. It knocked Giltera unconscious for two days, but when he awoke, he was transformed - and far more powerful than any mortal human. He arose as the first vampire, and through accident discovered that blood would allow the sharing of his gift.   Aeson left them to their own devices.   Then, one day, in one of the countries he now fancied himself king of, he encountered a woman who was the spitting image of his first love, Esalia. Thinking it to be her reincarnated, he approached, and, frozen to the spot in fear, she let him talk to her. Her name was not Esalia, but Herina, and at first, she wanted nothing to do with Aeson. Still, Aeson wanted her to join him, but gave her time to make up her mind - he would hate to force someone to be with him if they hated him, especially if he loved them.   Herina came to Aeson some days later, having made up her mind. She would stay at his side, but only if he stopped his destruction and the takeover of countries. Aeson readily agreed, all too happy to have companionship once more. Over the next few years, he got Herina to agree to be bonded to him, and then, for the next 858 years, peace reigned across the world - or at least, nothing was instigated by the Verith, though he would still seek and kill the Fasar whenever it looked like they might be a threat to what he held dear.   In 20210 NT, a Fasar arose that Aeson kept a careful eye on. Herina didn't want Aeson to mess with him, fearing the fight would end in Aeson's death this time, but Aeson disagreed. Still, he let this particular Fasar live, finding himself amused that the man was making tyrannical demands of the world. It wasn't until he was finally challenged in 20260 NT that things got messy. Thinking it was just for fun, Aeson rose to the challenge, and was about to win, but evidently the Fasar was a sore loser, and struck down Herina, who had been watching nearby.   This third time finally broke Aeson. The darkness of the Verith's powers finally took over completely, and blinded by rage, he slaughtered the Fasar, tearing him limb from limb, and went on a rampage. He cared not what or who he destroyed, gone entirely mad by now, and for twenty years he murdered each and every Fasar with little rest.   Eventually, even his energy stores ran low, and when he did have to rest is when one Fasar found him first. They fought, and this time it was Aeson who was severely injured and weakened. The Fasar took this chance to wrap Aeson in holy power and seal him in a lair deep underground, where he would never be disturbed.   While the world above breathed a sigh of relief, it wasn't over for Aeson. Alive and awake in complete darkness, bound to a small room, he began to lose who he was as the years dragged on. Hours became days, became weeks, then months, years, and millennia. He forgot his name, his origins, and much of his life. All became shrouded in the darkness that enveloped his mind.   In 2xxxx NT, the seal of his room began to fade. Feeling it, he awoke, and began to lash out at his bindings. It took him two weeks to break free. Once he did, he was back to his old ways. There were strange creatures around him to kill, and he attacked one of them, but they fought back, hard, while others fled. There were also humans dressed in clothes he was unfamiliar with.   He lost an arm in a fight with Sholto there, but soon regenerated it. Seeing someone more vulnerable - Reid - he snatched him, and teleported far away.   While now he had a captive, he wasn't sure what to do with him.   He decided to ask first about the world at large. Reid was content to tell him about it, but was cagey with a lot of information. (After all, the obvious goal at the time was still to destroy the corrupted Verith.) Growing angrier with Reid as time passed, the Verith began to torment and torture Reid, and eventually broke him to his will, and turned him into a servant. While this turned Reid, then called Falcon, complacent with all that later occurred, he still retained enough of himself that he began to talk some sense into the Verith.   And the Verith started to listen. Though at first he went on a path of destruction, seeking out the Fasar, he soon had to go into hiding with Falcon, too weakened by the imbalance imposed by his own reckless actions. On the way to where they would hide, they were attacked by an elite military strike team, and Falcon was nearly killed. Realizing he was about to lose yet another person he'd come to care for, the Verith rained lava down on his enemies, slaying them all. He then healed Falcon and continued his flight to the mountains they were to hide in.   There, Falcon recovered, and started to regain more of himself. Though he was still under the Verith's control, and worked to gain more allies by going into the nearest city and kidnapping people, he realized he'd fallen in love with the Verith. Wanting to save both the world and the man he loved, he tried talking the Verith into ruling the world rather than destroying it. Seeing merit in Falcon's words, the Verith slowly agreed that it was a good idea - and also admitted his love for Falcon.   One evening, while Falcon was out in the city of Morva, he was pursued by Alberic, who trailed him back to the base. Stating reasons of boredom and interest, he claimed he wanted to join the Verith. He was allowed to do so. Alberic even went as far as helping turn captives into loyal fanatics, to help seal his position as a supporter.   They remained in hiding, building up their mountain base while planning how to take over the world. It wasn't long before the first of five massive death rituals occurred, its power directed into the Verith to force him to recover faster and gain strength. A message was embedded into the ritual's energy: "The vampires are with you."   Seeing as they had allies around the world now, Falcon had the idea to get to a radio tower and broadcast a message that they had received the vampires' gifts. The Verith made the decision to follow through with it. In the short broadcast, he instructed the vampires to be patient and wait for orders, and to continue upholding the laws the humans had placed on them.   Several days later, the second ritual happened, this time with Falcon in close proximity to the Verith - and its power flowed into him, as well, forcing the fabric of his being to alter. No longer an Omega Blunt, Falcon gained the power of Holy Flame, among other abilities to be discovered later. Over the following week, two more rituals occurred, one flowing exclusively into the Verith, the fourth being shared with Falcon, again enhancing them both - but also enhancing the Fasar.   Not long after, with their location given away by Kyrakos, who had joined them before the first of the rituals, they were forced out of their mountain base and into empty plains far away, where they were then caught in a blunt field-lined trap launched by Argensara's military, spearheaded by Cynric and Sholto. The fight saw grievous injury on both sides, and there, Sholto almost won Falcon back over, but the Verith, severely wounded by Cynric and about to be slain, was protected at the last second from a fatal blow by Falcon teleporting in front of him.   Falcon took the brunt of the Fasar's holy sword stroke, nearly losing his right arm, and then, since enough of the blunt field generators were finally down thanks to Alberic and the mind-controlled fanatics, the Verith teleported himself and Falcon far, far away. Alberic followed. The fanatics were left behind.   It turned out they'd entered Italy, and a part ruled by Matthias Raimondi's clan, no less. They found out because they were attacked by a pair of opportunistic vampires, who quickly backed off once they realized who they were dealing with. Apologizing profusely, they escorted the Verith, Falcon, and Alberic to the Raimondi estate, where they were cared for and allowed to recuperate.   Days later, they met Matthias himself. They talked about their alliance, but the final of the death rituals interrupted, knocking the Verith sorely off balance and sending Falcon to the floor. Both men passed out, and were taken to a part of the manor to rest.   It was there that the Verith took on the name of Thanos, no longer wishing to go by merely a title, since he was regaining something of an identity beyond being just some monster. Once he and Falcon recovered, and Matthias made arrangements for the death rituals to cease, events calmed for some time. Thanos laid low, but his plans for world domination didn't stop running through his head. They were to meet with the clan Lord in China in due time.   Before then, however, Alberic suggested Thanos try properly dating Falcon. It was shortly after their date that, with Aeson's old self influencing Thanos' actions, Thanos freed Falcon from his mind control, returning all memories to him back in order. Falcon passed out from this, and Thanos took him somewhere safe to recover.   Falcon awoke once more as Reid, whole and angry, and at first retaliated against Thanos for all he'd done to him. But then, forgave him, and admitted he still loved him even after everything that had happened, claiming to love the man Thanos was becoming. Thanos expressed his wish to give up being the Verith, believing he had lived too long and too embittered, but the only way to pass on the power was to die. He didn't mind. Reid brought up that Thanos still had work to do, however - that being helping repair the arcana balance.   So they continued on to Chongqing, China, where they were to meet up with Cynric, Sholto, and the others. However, there was more than just the balance to worry about - a greater demon was working its way through the cracks, and Thanos and Cynric now had to fend it off. Teaming up with each other and the local vampires, they fought the greater demon, a massive, twisted mess of chaotic flesh, sinew, and dark miasma, outside of the city's borders, and managed to slay it within the day.   Later, thanks to Erathmus and Yrdien having overheard Reid talk about a way to pass on the Verith's powers without death, they came up with a ritual to allow just that, which Thanos willingly submitted himself to. His power passed to his son, Kyrakos, who remained the Verith for millennia to come.   However, Thanos' story doesn't end there.   After having some downtime and getting to know each other better, the next phase of his life began.   There was still the problem of vampires being treated unjustly to deal with, and they looked to Thanos, their creator, as the answer to their problems. So, he found himself, along with Sholto, Reid, Kyrakos, Cynric, and Faladir entrenched in vampire politics, to try helping them unite under one cause and work on better relationships with the humans.   Near the end, during the meeting of all the Lords, they were betrayed by Ithamar Elenisia, who had a splinter group of the Reifier Klamén take Sholto and Thanos to their base in orbit, while he himself took Reid and Kyrakos captive in his castle in the mountains.   Sholto and Thanos were put under torture and attempted mind control by the RK, headed by Sholto's old enemy, Kriemhilde, but managed to escape after several weeks, and tore their way through the base, killing all who stood in their way. Just after taking down Kriemhilde, Sholto's cousin, Malakai, along with Cynric, Sylvanus, and Damianos, entered the ship, having meant to rescue them. They were safely extracted and allowed to recover while Malakai followed up leads on where Reid and Kyrakos might be.   Once they located them, it was a raid on Ithamar's castle to rescue them. However, as with Sholto and Thanos, by the time the group arrived, Reid and Kyrakos were busy fighting Ithamar for their freedom. It was a hard-won fight, and it was Reid who struck the final blow on Ithamar, burning him up in holy fire until he was nought but dust. Afterwards, Reid collapsed, and was at first thought to be dead. Ithamar's influence was found in his mind, and carefully extracted by Shenna, after which Reid was able to better recover.   During their time on Malakai's ship is when Sholto asked Thanos to marry him, who gladly agreed, despite being shocked by the question. It was shortly after that Thanos took the name Thanos Aeson Liam.   Once Reid was recovered from Ithamar's imposed trauma, he slowly forgave Thanos a second time, and moved in permanently with Sholto and Thanos - and later married them both. For several years, they lived in peace in the space colony Jasina, while Kyrakos and Cynric worked to settle the the vampires back down without them and finish restoring the balance.   With that said and done, Terra knew peace again for some time.   (The following is subject to change.)   Some time later, a powerful entity rivaling the power of both Cynric and Kyrakos entered Terra through a rift, and sought to enslave all of its people. Naturally not wanting to allow such a thing to happen, Sholto and the others were once more moved to action to stop this entity who fashioned itself a god. Armies united, and everyone fought long and hard to quell the entity, to little avail. Sholto ended up getting too close, and was slain by it. His body dispersed into motes of light before anyone could reach it, and he later reappeared one month later, possessed by a celestial entity calling itself an angel.   Once the god-entity was slain, it was time to take care of the angel, and get Sholto back. Alberic proved to be instrumental to this, summoning a demon to consume the angel, leaving Sholto's body behind. Sylvanus and Cynric worked quickly, as the body began to decay, so they salvaged the head and preserved it before permanent damage could set in. From there, they worked tirelessly over the next six months to rebuild Sholto's body.   All too thrilled to finally have his husband back, Thanos didn't release Sholto for some time, along with Reid.   (End minor arc.)   Three years of peace followed. Then, one day, Sholto received an encrypted message from someone in the Reifier Klamén: "Rejoin us, or we'll kill Reid and Thanos." Enraged by this threat, Sholto went back down to Terra and worked closely with Sylvanus on a mission to infiltrate an RK base. Who he encountered before entering the building surprised him; a man from another world, come through a rift like so many of late, named Xarxus Sakjutarést.   It was only after Sholto turned up with Xarxus and Sage Brandr at Sylvanus' manor that Thanos and Reid got the rundown on the story, and both men were angered and annoyed by not only the RK's actions, but also Sholto's. They ended up forgiving their husband. Over the days, they got to know Sage and Xarxus, slowly becoming friends with them, and agreed to help Sholto rescue the rest of Sage's family from the RK.   Later that year, they all ended up on Alluani following Sholto and Xarxus, and a new adventure to save the foreign planet began.

Education

Primary school (outdated), extensive military combat training. Later, intelligence technology and stealth training from Reid and Sholto. Once life settles down, he plans on attending a university and majoring in fine arts.

Employment

Unemployed, but worked as a barista for a little while on the space colony Jasina. He was very popular with the ladies there, thanks to his good looks and deep voice.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Thanks to Reid, and later Sholto, began to piece himself back together and become whole rather than two split halves of a person. He now fights to aid the world rather than hurt it.

Failures & Embarrassments

Fell to the darker influence of the Verith powers for a long, long time, and without a support system, got stuck in a feedback loop of self-destructive grief and turmoil until his true identity was buried under a split personality.

Mental Trauma

For a long time, unaddressed PTSD from having lovers ripped away from him, and having spent some of his early life in abusive slavery. Damage done by the splinter RK group. Living as a self-loathing monster for millennia.   With extensive therapy, he is overcoming these traumas.

Intellectual Characteristics

Cannot be deceived by most illusions, too old and too infused with the residual power of the Verith. While much of his life was one spent bent on destruction, he is not without a working brain. He can learn quickly, and compensate for changes in any situation. While not the best tactician, he does know something of how to negotiate deals, and he understands manipulation and subterfuge.   He also has developed an appreciation for the arts, and has begun studying art history and painting techniques. He's also slowly learning good taste in fashion, thanks to several people in his life.

Morality & Philosophy

Let me be your light.
— Reid Faulkner
Thanos' morality is a bit in the grey area, having been on both sides of the "good" and "bad" spectrum. He'll do what he believes needs done, but he also tends to believe that the ends justify the means. However, he also understands he's not always correct in this, and so lets Reid be his moral compass when he is unsure of himself.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Primarily, he follows wherever his family goes, but he does believe in their causes. He lives on Terra, too, and cares for the home planets of those he calls friends. He would go far to save all three from danger.

Virtues & Personality perks

Observant, adaptive, impossible to deceive, honest with those he cares about, works to better himself and get over his issues. Very clean; doesn't expect others to pick up after him.

Vices & Personality flaws

Has a fairly short fuse, and so gets angered easily, but usually not without good cause. Possessive of his spouses. Sometimes he's rude when he shouldn't be. Somewhat socially inept.

Social

Family Ties

Spouses:   Step children:
  • Iolanthe Brandr
  • Eluria Brandr

Religious Views

Despises most deities on principle, though he likes that Alluanian gods actually respond to their people.

Social Aptitude

Stern, stoic, a little crass, easily provoked into rudeness. Has violent tendencies, though he's gotten good at controlling himself regarding any outbursts. Doesn't display much emotion to anyone he's not very close to, making him come across as very aloof to most, and intimidating to many.

Hobbies & Pets

Having not been free of his life as the Verith for very long, and with so little downtime between major world crises, he's had little time to pursue personal interests. However, he's discovered joy in reading fiction novels, and playing video games with his husbands. He also likes basking in sunlight and going swimming, and has recently taken some interest in painting, though he's not very good at it yet.

Speech

Has a deep bass voice, with an almost gravelly edge to it. His tone is typically neutral, but can easily fall into cockiness or aggression when provoked. He speaks somewhat slowly and enunciates each word adequately, never slurring, so he's almost never misunderstood - unless for some reason he's faltering or at a loss for words.
