Session 17 - The Aminzu
General Summary
Khajit, Kylar, and Yog find the 'great statue' that the kobolds mentioned retrieving from deep within, when suddenly this glowing magic orb they previously found rushes to re-unite with it. Upon it entering the warforged chassis it exploded in a mist that coalesced into 5 spirits of warriors. The spirits drew closer towards the prone warforged apparently seeking warmth. Kylar and Khajit both attempt to persuade them to leave it alone and to pass on. The spirits now confused, eventually closed in on Kylar as he suggested he could help them. Having enough of this he opens fire and the rest of the team dispatches them one after the other.
Late for his first assignment, Astyages, is hot on the trail of the team who had given up and left without him. Finding the dead body of Willow and giving the corpse some proper rites and then stumbling upon the scuffle with spirits. IG-88, the warforged 'statue' now animate stands and questions the group, his surroundings and even his memories. He only vaguely remembers gearing up for a great battle to capture a powerful enemy in what was eventually determined to be the Second Planar War, a conflict over 2000 years old. Determined to find more answers he asks where he came from where Gux reluctantly points to further in the dungeon. There the kobolds met with a 'mean guardian that flys' and prevented them from looting the ruins even further.
After a brief rest the party send Kothar back to the hive cell in Konigsberg and continued to these ruins where they indeed found a winged angelic guardian of sorts amid a pile of dead kobolds. This angel explained that the mortal who crafted the enlarged permanent magic circle failed to exclude celestials from its effects which left her imprisoned and unable to complete her task. A task to destroy a great evil relic stored here. She made a deal that she would not attack them so long as they did not further the cause of evil. Kylar and the others did not take a liking to her brash and condescending attitude, and refused to divulge her name or what the relic does. She retreats back, warning that she will deal with anyone that attempts to take the relic as she did with the kobolds, unless they help her and set her free from the imprisonment.
Khajit decides that he's fast enough to get past her before she can stop him. He was mostly correct, but not before she was able to poison him with an arrow and laugh off his retaliatory hellish rebuke. Unfortunately for the tabaxi this 'relic' was at a dead end, in a tomb with a what he was able to identify as a very evil general of the devil forces, an Aminzu. While the now enraged winged being could not reach him, he was lucky that this general was dead and chained to a stone slab, making him safe for the moment.
Kylar attempts multiple times to shut off the magic circle and Yog even tries some brute force which she met with an almost equal amount of magical backfire. IG-88 almost shuts it off, but Astyages was able to see where he went wrong and successfully shut it down. The frustrated winged prisoner of sorts returned to the group just in time to witness the circle being turned off. She immediately flew back to the tabaxi but was met with yet another defense mechanism, a forbiddence ward on the tomb itself. This prevented her from entering the chamber with the feline humanoid.
Either set on attempting to get this 'relic' for himself or just releasing the evil creature out of spite towards the rude 'angel', Khajit picks the lock on the shackles. Unfortunately for him, the winged boots he recently attuned to had a curse of locking anything he attempts to open, making the restraints re-lock immediately. Seeing this, the no longer imprisoned being flys back to the group of adventurers that seem to be able to get things done and insists to them they help out their feline friend.
Kylar happily passes by her flapping wings, eager to show how capable 'mere mortals' are. He quickly unlocks and removes the shackles from the Aminzu, who then almost immediately dissipates into ashes and a sinister laugh outside the room is heard. Yog had finally caught up with the rest of them when the supposed angel yells "Attack!" in infernal. Thinking ahead the tortle had turned on the cube of force to protect against magical effects which saved him an initial barrage, but the winged betrayer had moved back and attacked IG-88. She missed him because she was laughing too much at being able to trick them so easily. Imps soon got the drop on most of the party apparently waiting to strike on her command.
The team deals with the Imps and catches up to the retreating leader who decides to go toe to toe with Yog. Khajit takes the shackles that had originally kept the Aminzu in place and rushed and surprised the winged betrayer shackling her. Fortunately for her the last remaining Imp had not dropped invisibility and luckily removed the shackles. Scuffles ensue and Yog locks the cube down to not allow anything to enter or leave which turned out badly as other party members could not help bring down the fiendish fallen angel. He was able to shut off the cube before falling unconscious which allowed the devil to escape her grasp and continue her retreat.
With some quick healing from Astyages and now the full force of the rest of the party they quickly widdle down their foe with Yog now blocking her only exit. She laughs as she is felled and turns to dust, vowing to see them again. Oddly, however, her armor and weapons did not leave with her. The threat now gone the party got to looting the ruins, the parts that the kobolds had not given back to Ryphol.
