Fundament
[History]
The village of Fundament has a longstanding history and was one of the first Goblin villages on the mainland. As the first lands settled once the Goblins and Hobgoblins left their volcanic homeland, the Isle of Sky. Considered unworthy of the lands of Espen, the goblins tribes were met with animus by their Elvish and Gnomish counterparts. Despite the Goblins' impressive mastery of commerce and trade, they were still discounted as a "lesser race." Their fleet, unassuming at the time was blockaded after the initial group made landfall southwest of present-day Hatchetwinks. Despite numerous appeals to end the blockade to the Elvish Union and the Gnome Council, for months it persisted, nearly starving out the fledgling village. Finally taking matters into their own hand, the Master Executor initiated the first military action against one of the "four major" cultures. Commissioning a small group of elite forces known as "The Hammers," the goblins disabled 7 Gnomish longships and set fire to 3 Elvish Galleys. After suffering these losses both the Gnomish and Elvish leadership found the cost of the blockade far too expensive and ceased any further hostilities. Though history would refer to it as the Battle of Fundament, there was in fact, no battle. The Goblins decimated their opposition handily and established their culture as presence on the mainland and military force. Today the mining village not only commemorates the Goblin's Victory at fundament with the Fresco Au'Fundament a massive painting on the ceilings of the Grand Hall.[Locations]
The Grand Hall of Talzilk stands at the center of the Fundament as a dual-purpose trade hub and cultural center. Named for the founder of the legendary military unit the Hammers, Talzilk Caût. The Grand Hall much like the rest of the buildings in the area made of the same marble and quartz that is native to the area. The town's fame for the Goblin's military victory is only shrouded by the town's renown for its high-quality stonework, rivaled only by some Dwarvish cities. The Parchment Street Marble Company is the conglomerate responsible for the contracts that see the PSMC's products shipped to every corner of Espen. The second most dominant industry in the village is simply an extension of the first. The quality stones produced here led a great deal of artists and engineers to the village to find the best raw materials for their products. A few of them even stayed, making Fundament their home. Of these, the most successful was a human sculpture, Mortis Quietus. His shop Momento Mortis not only provides the best headstones but a number of the most well-known monuments across Espen. The Fundamental is the only Inn in town and while the beds are (literally) as hard as stone, most travelers find that the drinks being equally as stiff seems to make everything even out. It's innkeeper Harrin Pennycross a Dwarvish archivist and his assistant/groundskeeper Cronk Lyanti.
