Kingdom of Martell

Former High Elf kingdom, one of the kingdoms of the Old Empire .
The Martell family ruled the kingdom for thousands of years. In fact, their own stories claim that the Kingdom and their rulership of it predated the coming of the New Gods and thus the foundation of the Old Empire. They trace their descent to the ancient hero Mart the Mage.
The Kingdom did not survive the The War of the Elves and the Giants . When the great northern Giant army attacked, Martell sat in the front line. Most of its inhabitants were killed and its lightly defended villas and palaces were destroyed in the initial Giant onslaught. By the time Men arrived in Ettrea towards the end of the war, all that remained was a wasteland.
A tribe of men who refused to swear allegiance to the Emperor settled here. These were the Siggs and their land eventually became the Kingdom of Sigsland .
Those few High Elves who returned to Martell after the end of the war settled in a much smaller area. The Kingdom of Sigsland remained independent from the New Empire for several centuries. When it was conquered after the Siggish Wars and annexed piecemeal by the Empire, the elves voluntarily joined as the County of Martell (sometimes written as 'Martel'), a state once again ruled by the Martell family.
The Martell family were prominent triarchists . When the Triarchist Crusade started, the county was invaded and its forces completely defeated. Count Averi Martell was executed and the County ended.
