Order of the Imperial Inquisition

The Order of the Imperial Inquisition was formed by order of Saint Avaria when the Holy Platinum Empire was founded. Tasked with maintaining law and order throughout the various city states and principalities that made up the Empire, the Inquisition was given an authority structure outside of normal law enforcement.   The Inquisition deals with issues of law and order that are either beyond the expertise of local authorities, cross territorial boundaries or where the local authorities fear their own organizations may be compromised. When a local authority feels the need for the Inquisition they submit an Invitation to Investigate to their local OII branch, who upon approval of the Invitation, forward it to a pair of partnered Inquisitors to investigate and hunt down the perpetrators.

Structure

The Grand Inquisitor is appointed by the Emperor from among the ranks of the Inquisition and holds his title until he retires, dies or the Emperor appoints a new Grand Inquisitor.   The Grand Inquisitor is based out of the headquarters of the Inquisition in Avariandorf and co-ordinates the Inquisition throughout the Empire.   A Master Inquisitor heads each of the Offices of the Inquisition located in each major city throughout the Empire. Under a Master Inquisitor the roles of the Inquisition are divided into two divisions. The Order of the Inquisitorial Administration and the Order of Inquisitorial Execution.   The Order of Inquisitorial Administration runs the Office of the Inquisition and deals with logistics and administration. The head of an Office is known as an Inquisitorial Administrator and he manages the Clerks of the Inquisition. Towns outside of a major population hub may have access an Inquisitorial Outpost - these offices are run solely by the Order of Inquisitorial Administration for the purposes of aiding local Inquisitors with logistical support. Such outposts are run by an Inquisitorial Master Clerk who either works alone or with a couple of clerks depending on the size of the outpost.   The Order of Inquisitorial Execution is the mainstay of the Inquisition and its Inquisitors fulfill its the core responsibilities. The head of Inquisitorial Execution is a Knight-Inquisitor. Knight-Inquisitors are attached to a local Office and assigns Invitations approved by the Inquisitorial Administrator to available Inquisitors. His further duties include leading special operations involving multiple pairs of Inquisitors, dealing directly with Invitations pertaining to the city their Office is in and overseeing disciplinary procedures as needed.   Inquisitors operate in pairs throughout the empire and report to Knight-Inquisitors or the Master Inquisitor as needed. An pair of Inquisitor's are given great leeway as to their operations, but should their actions result in a formal complaint from a high ranking government official they will be taken to task by their assigned Knight-Inquisitor.   Acolytes are the lowest rank in the Inquisition, an acolyte must study under both a Clerk and a pair of Inquisitors, before being assigned to one of the two Offices on the recommendation of their mentors.
