Kingdom of Caldersfyr

The Kingdom of Caldersfyr in among the younger nations of Nythlaang. Ruled by King Y'rithgar the Civilized, the nation of Caldersfyr is going through something of a renaissance. Caldians are highly suspect of magic, believing Norgyanthia's fate to be the result of such dabbling. But while magic itself is outlawed, Caldersfyr knows it needs something to protect itself from the predations of other magic wielding nations. Using scavenged runic enchantments and a focus on industry, Caldersfyr has created a slew of advanced weapons with which to hold back it's would be oppressors.

Public Agenda

To ensure mankind can exist apart from the predations and whims of magic and gods.

History

The Kingdom of Caldersfyr is the youngest kingdom on Nythlaang having been formed by Y'rithgar in his youth. Y'rithgar was born in the village of Calder in the north-eastern reaches of what is now Caldersfyr. When his village was overrun by rampaging undead out of Norgyanthia, Y'rithgar's family was killed and at 12 years old he was left to survive on his own. Eventually Y'rithgar became an adventurer and amassed a great fortune for himself with which he decided to found a kingdom in the sparsely populated north. In memory of his destroyed village he named the Kingdom Caldersfyr meaning "Legacy of Calder."   There were no major cities in the unclaimed lands that Y'rithgar settled and the villages and nomadic tribes frequently succumbed to the various threats of undead, goblinoids and giants that roamed the area. Y'rithgar's first order of business was to create the Citadel, he contracted Dwarven stonemasons from the Giantshield Mountains to travel to a mesa upon which he built a fortress city unparalleled in Eotha.   From the dwarves he learnt of an abandoned hold, he assigned a regent to the Citadel and led an expedition into the hold to gather it's forgotten resources. Here was able to get access to the secret runic magics the Dwarves had refused to share in the past. By 860 YD the Citadel had become known as a place of safety, technological advancement and had grown to be the third largest city on Nythlaang. During the Wythanhaalian civil war, two of the Wyrthanhaal's northern duchies seceded in order to join the relative safety Caldersfyr seemed to provide. These two duchies are only now fully adjusting to life without magic and the stringent way of life Y'rithgar insists is necessary for the nation's survival.

Demography and Population

Humans are the dominate species in Caldersfyr and halflings a minority species. Caldersfyr has a higher than average longevity as alchemists are trained in the Citadel in the art of creating Potions of Longevity, each citizen is entitled to one dose of the potion and further doses are gifted for exceptional acts of service to the state.

Military

Caldersfyr's core military is made up of elite ranger corps, who are highly equipped and mobile. Caldersfyr also has a military presence in all settlements due to its compulsory military service. Service in the military is compulsory for all able bodied youths aged 16-22 who are trained in the use of the crossbow, axe and shield. Service beyond this is awarded with access to a Potion of Longevity for all family members of the volunteer.   Career military personnel join the ranger corp and receiving specialized training with Caldersfyr's more advanced technologies.

Religion

The Doctrine of Certainty is a document Y'rithgar penned shortly before forming the nation of Caldersfyr, it argued that while the gods and saints certainly existed and had much power, humanity's dependance on them led to uncertainty. Would the god or saint intervene in their time of need - or would an evil god or saint be the one that swayed the tide.   Only through reasoned mastery of one's environment could one have any sense of certainty in their safety and security. Civilization that avoids the trappings of magic and religion would ensure that one could have confidence that the powers that keep them alive would act in a reliable and certain manner.

Foreign Relations

Caldersfyr is on frosty terms with all its neighbours, viewing any nation that allows the use of magic within it's borders as an existential threat. Caldersfyr has been in a permanent state of war with Norgyanthia since Caldersfyr was founded with Y'rithgar insisting it is only a matter of time before they attack.   Norgyanthia's war with Wyrthanhaal has not gone unanswered by Caldersfyr, claiming solidarity with any who would oppose undead aggression, Y'rithgar has begun sending expeditionary forces into Norgyanthia with the aim of disrupting supply lines and forcing the nation to divide it's military.

Infrastructure

Caldersfyr has developed an early version of rail using runes of repulsion and Y'rithgar designed the expansion of the rails system to be the beating heart of his nation. Frontier towns and villages can rely on the swift delivery of reinforcements should they come under attack and new sources of minerals and agricultural goods are swiftly connected to the network.   The Runic Rail system is not effective at dealing with anything beyond a 2 degree angle of turn which greatly limits the ability of more localized rail systems.

By flesh, blood and steel alone.
