Duchy of Nulnyn

The duchy of Nulnyn is the westernmost duchy of the Kingdom of Wyrthanhaal, that is assuming that you do not include the Free Cities of the Elsir Vale as a defunct duchy of the kingdom.   Nulnyn is famous for it's salt mines that make it one of Wyrthanhaal's greatest source of exports. Nulnyn as been undergoing a bout of political turmoil and infighting recently, with a planned insurrection against it's Duke, Evernys , recently thwarted by a group of adventurers.

Structure

Nulnyn is ruled by a Duke who counsels with a group of four Counts and holds court with one hundred and twenty-three baronies. The Duke is the head of state and holds a seat on the Grand Council of Duchies which runs the Kingdom of Wyrthanhaal. The Marshal of Nulnyn is a temporary title granted to one of the Duke's loyal lords during a time of war. The Marshal is in charge of mustering and commanding the troops of Nulnyn under the Duke's name. The Sheriff of Nulnyn is one of the few state funded jobs in the duchy. The sheriff is responsible for keeping the taxes safe and combating potential threats to regions unable to handle them, namely monsters or large bands of raiders.

History

Nulnyn's recent history is defined by three key events. The Battle of Blue Blood during the Wyrthanhaal Civil War, the succession of Duke Evernys and an attempted coup by Count Brynia.   The Battle of Blue Blood though a major victory for Nulnyn left a sense of unease among the nobility. Duke Frendivald used tactics and strategies many felt were lacking in chivalric character. Almost none of the nobility of Nulnyn had to lift their weapons during the battle and this left them hungering to prove themselves on the fields of war. But Frendivald continued to be a savvy politician and terrifyingly efficient battlefield commander. Only one other battle was fought in the civil war, an ambush of the troops of the Duchy of Calnyd that brought Duke Brendal to heel in signing the Accords of the Council of Dukes.   When Duke Frendivald died his son, Evernys was only just of age to take over the duchy. Evernys quickly came under the sway of Count Brynia who set himself up as the young dukes most effective advisor. It was rumoured that Frendivald did not die of natural causes and Brynia played upon these doubts, seeding the beginning of Evernys' growing paranoia.   Two years later a group of adventurers, including the fifth son of Baron Girighast, uncovered a plot by Count Brynia that indicated that he was attempting a coup to take control of Nulnyn to fight of what he believed to be an imminent extra-planar invasion. Count Brynia was ousted but the threat he was preparing for was taken seriously. Nulnyn now musters for war, their armies posed on the border of the Golden Plains, their nobles desperate to show their worth on the field of battle.
