House Brugwachter

The Fiefdom of the Brugwachter family is said to have been granted after an extraordinary act of heroism by the family's founder, Sigismund van Brugwachter. Sigismund was a Doppelsöldner taking part in the defense of Hakkerburg. When a band of Skold sought to cross and raid against the sole bridge into Hakkerburg, Sigismund stepped forward, taking zweihander in hand and held the bridge while the hue and cry could be raised. Holding the bridge for well over an hour alone, the Mercenaries were able to mount a defense against further aggressions and hold out till relief arrived to rout the brigands.
Sigismund efforts in the defense were not forgotten, and his single-handed defense of the bridge and the wounds he later received leading the defense earned him the attention of the van Tollenaar family, who for his considerable efforts, elevated Sigismund to the chivalry with the rank of Ridder and gave him Hakkerburg as his fief.
Sigismund took the surname Brugwachter as a nod to the noble actions that earned him his unique commendation, and his family has since held Hakkerburg proudly as the Ridders of the growing town.
