Fellspawn
Fellspawn
The Fellspawn are creatures born of shadow and corruption, twisted reflections of the living beings of Enderlin. Legends claim that they once roamed the land in terrifying hordes, though for centuries most have believed them fully exterminated. Yet whispers tell of pockets where darkness still waits—abandoned dwarven holds in the Crescent Mountains, forgotten ruins of ancient cities, and deep caves beneath the northern forests.
Nature and Creation
The Fellspawn emerged during a cataclysmic event known as the Shadow Convergence, a period of fifty years when the barrier between the Shadowfell and the material world was shattered. The mage Zul-Kharim of The Empire of Zahārath, seeking immortality and mastery over death, made a dark pact with Shar, God of Darkness, and performed the forbidden Ritual of Convergence beneath the hidden catacombs of Al-Nurath al-Athar.
The consequences were immediate and devastating:
- Darkness spilled across Enderlin, twisting the land and warping reality.
- Creatures, both mundane and magical, were corrupted, giving rise to the Fellspawn.
- Cities became cursed, forests warped into shadow-haunted wilds, and magic itself became dangerous and unpredictable.
Though The Shadow Convergence was eventually ended by legendary heroes who destroyed Zul-Kharim and banished the Fellspawn, the corruption left permanent scars on the world. The Hollow Sun (formerly Al-Nurath al-Athar), the Crescent Mountains, and other cursed regions remain dark and dangerous, their shadows hiding creatures that refuse to die.
Common types of Fellspawn
Fellspawn often retain some resemblance to their original forms, though all are twisted, monstrous, and driven by hunger or malice. Scholars classify them according to the creatures they once were:
| Origin | Fellspawn Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Humans | Fell-Touched | The most common type of Fellspawn. Strong and cunning, they resemble humans twisted by shadow, often found in small pockets and dark places. |
| Dwarves | Deepfell | Hardy, subterranean terrors with warped features, clawed hands, and obsidian-like skin; dwell in abandoned mountain holds. |
| Elves | Veiled Fell | Highly intelligent and cunning, often leading other Fellspawn. They exclusively wield dark Fell magic for attacks, using it to manipulate and control shadowy minions. |
| Goliaths | Fell Giants | Massive and brutal, their immense size is matched by unrelenting aggression. |
| Dragonborn | Fell Aberrants | Draconic in shape but deformed and tainted, often exhaling shadowy breath or covered in twisted scales. |
| Tieflings | Fell Demons | Their infernal heritage magnified, they become horrifying and otherworldly, feeding on fear. |
| Halflings/Gnomes | Fell Stalkers | Small, cunning, and terrifyingly silent, they ambush with uncanny precision and work in groups. |
| Goblins | Fell Screamers | Their cries disorient and terrify, echoing across caves and ruins; they are often found in groups. |
| Orcs | Fell Berserkers | Savage and nearly mindless, driven only by rage and hunger; incredibly dangerous in combat. |
Current Presence
While Enderlinian history records the widespread devastation caused by the Fellspawn, today they are largely hidden. Most civilized folk believe them extinct, stories relegated to cautionary tales and old legends. However, explorers, miners, and hermits occasionally report strange attacks or glimpses of creatures in forgotten halls, ruined fortresses, or deep forests.
Some regions are particularly notorious for lingering Fellspawn activity:
- Abandoned dwarven holds of the Crescent Mountains
- Ruins near the Great Desert
- Forgotten crypts beneath old Zahārathan ruins
- Upper areas of the Underdark.
Scholars and adventurers warn that while the Shadow Convergence ended centuries ago, its legacy persists. Where darkness gathers, shadows may still walk—and the Fellspawn are never truly gone.
Cultural Echoes
- Religious teachings: Many faiths view the Shadow Convergence as a lesson in pride and the dangers of unchecked ambition. Some preach that the Shadowfell mirrors mortal desire, warning that darkness can return.
- Proverbs:
- “The sun that fell is never truly forgotten.”
- “Where shadows linger, men’s hearts follow.”
- Artifacts and relics: Crystals of endless night, shadow-forged weapons, and other remnants of Zahārath are both feared and sought after by scholars, mages, and collectors.
The Fellspawn remain one of Enderlin’s darkest mysteries, a reminder that the world is older, stranger, and far more dangerous than even the wisest scholars believe.
