The Shadow Convergence
The Shadow Convergence
Timeframe: Last years of the Human Age, ~50 years of darkness
Event: The breaking of the barrier between the Shadowfell and the material world
Prelude: The Rise of Zahārath
At the height of its glory, The Empire of Zahārath was a beacon of arcane might. From the Radiant Capital of Al-Nurath al-Athar, its Enlightened Council ruled over half of Enderlin, shaping the lands with magic, trade, and diplomacy. Scholars traveled from distant lands to witness the empire’s wonders—floating spires, crystal bridges, and libraries where knowledge itself seemed alive.
Yet, within the council’s opulent halls, ambition festered. One mage, Zul-Kharim, hungered not merely for power, but for immortality and dominion over death itself.
The Pact with Shar
Desperate to secure his ascent, Zul-Kharim turned to Shar, the God of Darkness. In whispered rituals beneath Al-Nurath al-Athar’s hidden catacombs, he invoked powers forbidden for mortal kind.
The culmination was the Ritual of Convergence: a spell so potent it tore the boundaries between the Shadowfell and Enderlin. Darkness bled into the world, and from it emerged the Fellspawn, creatures of shadow and hunger, whose presence warped the very land.
The Fall of Zahārath
Once radiant streets became twisted by shadow, towers melted into obsidian, and the skies were stained with perpetual twilight. The Enlightened Council was destroyed, its members slain or twisted into shadows themselves.
The empire collapsed almost overnight, its armies unable to withstand the shadow tide. Neighboring kingdoms fell one by one, unable to repel the endless night. Cities burned, fields withered, and countless mortals were lost to despair—or to the Fellspawn.
Al-Nurath al-Athar became a ruined, cursed city, known in later ages as the Hollow Sun, its spires still visible on the horizon, blackened and crumbling.
The Age of Shadows
For over 50 years, Enderlin staggered beneath the pall of darkness. Scholars speak of Fellspawn hordes blotting out the sun, shadowstorms that devoured entire villages, and forests turned into living nightmares. Magic itself became tainted; many mages who attempted to fight the darkness were corrupted, becoming wraiths and liches bound to the Shadowfell.
Zul-Kharim, now transformed into the Lich Emperor, ruled as a dark god among men. His citadel, the Obsidian Spire, was said to pierce the very sky, a beacon of despair visible from every corner of the continent.
The Heroes and the Dawn
Legends tell of a fellowship of heroes, guided by visions from the gods of light, who sought to end the Shadow Convergence. Their names have faded into myth, but their deeds are eternal:
- They penetrated the Obsidian Spire, battling both Zul-Kharim and his endless legions.
- Through courage, cunning, and sacrifice, they destroyed Zul-Kharim’s phylactery and banished the Fellspawn back to the Shadowfell.
- Their victory restored the sun, ending the long night, and ushered in an Age of Renewal.
The world bore the scars for centuries. The Great Desert, once fertile lands surrounding Al-Nurath al-Athar, still hides ruins haunted by shadows. Some claim the Fellspawn never truly left, and only wait for another mortal to tear the veil again.
Cultural Echoes
- Religious Teachings: Many religious teachings mark the Convergence as the ultimate lesson in hubris and greed. Some clerics preach that the Shadowfell is a mirror of mortal ambition, a reminder that darkness can always return.
- Proverbs:
- “The sun that fell is never truly forgotten.”
- “Where shadows linger, men’s hearts follow.”
- Remnants of Magic: Artifacts from Zahārath, like crystals of endless night or shadow-forged weapons, are prized and feared.
