The History of Emynea so far
Accia is a world reshaped and altered by the Erlithmanil, embodiments and the raw consciousness of the elements that make up their world. They also gifted their magic to those lifeforms Luxis, god of life, had created--beasts, beings and plants. Eventually, they had gifted all of their magic away and the people who once worshiped them turned away from them. Lithmor, light, begged Luxis to return their power, but Luxis would not take away the magic that brought their creations such joy and power. Zalikar, darkness, turned then to Azryth, death, and made a secret pact with them. Azryth allowed all lifeforms to keep their connection and access to magic, but restored the Erlithmanil as the source and master of their elements.
In this new era, Zalikar proclaimed himself king and became like a scourge on humanity, wiping out whole populations and ripping out the souls of the most unlucky among them. In this dark period, humanity lived in fear and uncertainty as Zalikar offered no reason or explanation for this genocide. He had come to distrust the very nature of man. Luxis was furious with Azryth, believing they had upset the balance. They chose a faithful hero and granted them the power they would need to overcome the Erlithmanil, a power that would give them access to all magic: shape shifting. This hero gathered ten beasts to aid him, sharing his ability with them, and found an unexpected ally--Sylthari, daughter of Zalikar. Together, legends were born as they, by cunning or strength, destroyed the physical form of each Erlithmanil and sealed them away in Sylthari's crystals.
A new age began, one where humanity was free from the tyranny of vengeful and whimsical gods. The hero and Sylthari took the floating city of the Erlithmanil for their own and, settling into the fertile lands of the valley, established the kingdom of Accia. The hero and Sylthari wed and she passed down her divine, celestial blood to the newly born royal line. As the hero aged, he entrusted the crystals to each of his beast companions. He tasked them to hide the crystals away and guard them and for their own descendants to continue to guard them through the ages. However.... the Erlithmanil tempted the beasts, offering them a pact of their own. They offered full, unhindered access to their magics, powerful, draconic forms and complete immortality if they were to accept. In exchange, they would become their familiars and would be compelled to seek out potential hosts for their masters--new immortal bodies to claim as their own. The beasts, one by one, accepted and to this day seek out hosts for their masters.
Current Species & Cultures
The kingdom of Accia continued under the dominion of the Syltharis line, even as their matron would come and go. However, those nobility who served the kingdom would act under their own interests, eventually following their king in name only. Eons pass them by, empires rose and fell within and outside of the kingdom and at times the lords would war amongst themselves. That is until their king established ten official duchies, after the model of the elements themselves, and began a grand ambition to keep them united: they would unite the whole world under their kingdom. This ambition persisted as he called together both their greatest warriors and their greatest scholars. They created an enduring system which has allowed Accia to conquer most of their known world. From the western plains of Alkelbulan to the foggy mountain peaks of Zhongguo, every child of every reach of the kingdom, common or noble, would serve in their military and a special training program would maximize the potential and synergy of their recruits. Unofficially, this program also assimilated new peoples into Accian culture and instill them with blind nationalism before they return home. They continue their crawl across the world by war and diplomacy, reaching now for the 'Continent Beyond' as they call it, into Vapri's Isles and to the Celestial Archipelago. But there are other, less obvious players on the board. A mysterious puppeteer with agents everywhere, an unfortunate interloper fate has ensnared, and even the king himself, grasping into the shadows for immortality.
Needs & Relations
The mysterious interloper: A young teenage girl, our protagonist Tia, has her life uprooted by civil war and sails home with her family, a home unknown to her. She was born on foreign shores, her father a diplomat to the Celestial Archipelago. Her father returns to a life he left behind and a life he never intended his daughter to be caught up in. He is a Duke of one of the ten houses. Along the journey to the capital, Tia's mother slips out into the night. Tia follows after her, the final snare that would doom her to a dark future. Their pursuers become their attackers and Tia's mother leaves her behind. On the cusp of death, a mysterious creature, Duff, changes her to save her life. A freshly crafted shape shifter, she must conceal the events of that night and what she has become, not fully aware of what that is, in order to survive. This becomes increasingly difficult as she is caught up in noble society and more so when she is forced into recruitment. Tia will struggle to adapt to her new life, her strange peers and to understand the changes she is experiencing while evading discovery as larger forces seek her out to their own ends.
The mysterious puppeteer: An enigmatic figure, with her own complex and mysterious designs, heads a 'family' of shape shifters. They call her 'mother', planting her children throughout the globe in the interest of her family and something more. When she learns of Duff choosing a host after so many centuries of resistance, she is quick to jump into action. She, along with a number of others, place themselves in position to be recruited so they can begin their search for their new 'sibling'.
The King and his Shadows: The current king of Accia, Ambrose Syltharis, has arguably been one of the most successful one since they set out to conquer. He believed he would be the one to see their mission through and, after the final battle in Zhongguo, he could see the real possibility. But, in the past twenty years, the slow crawl of diplomacy and the stalling of progress at Banalkar's Throat has left him bitter and desperate. He realizes it will be his son, not he, who might see the end of this goal--his son who hadn't faced the same conflicts, the same losses, the same sacrifices that he had. He begins falling prey to the whispers from his dark advisor, Ghislain. He delves into the world of dark magic, rare after the genocides of Zalikar, going so far as creating a secret society. Ghislain, through his visions, believes finding the new shape shifter he has seen is Ambrose's path to immortality. Ambrose grows progressively more desperate and ruthless in grasping for Tia and slowly loses himself in the process.
