Prince Luctor of Argyle
Bane of the Green Dragon Flight
Prince Luctor Emergo (a.k.a. Wyrm's Bane)
Striding into the Council Chamber with an air of satisfaction, the filtered light catching his freshly cleaned armor and the polished hilt of his greatsword, Luctor approached the long table without pause and released three large, jagged, white teeth from his gauntlet. Stepping back to let the high priests see his full measure, the paladin proclaimed "The Green Menace is no more. Unrest is sure to come as word spreads of the dragon's vacant lair, but today the Narrowlands are safe".Prince Luctor is the first and current ruler of the Principality of Argyle. Prior to founding Argyle, Luctor was a famous knight errant in the service of the Knights of Paladine in Sirastir.
Early Life
At the time of his birth, Luctor's mother was a blacksmith in Lethorp and his father was a successful merchant overseeing caravans crossing the Silt Sea. Luctor grew up in the shadow of the forge, and started weapon training at an early age, as is common for the children of wealthy professionals without theocratic connections. By age 15 he had demonstrated suitable proficiency to gain admittance to the Solemn Academy of Paladine. After the academy, Luctor served as squire to Ser Esme Darkdraft, a knight stationed along the southeastern coastline of Sirastir. In those times, the coastal trade in the northern Dragon Sea was regularly threatened by lesser members of of Beryl's Green Dragonflight, and occasional privateers brave enough to attack ships with the expectation that any losses would be blamed on the dragons. After five years of dutiful service, Luctor received Darkdraft's commendation and made the trek to Sheabluff, Sirastir to be knighted.Knightly Service
As a member of the Knights of Paladine, Luctor was sent far and wide across Sirastir, often expected to take on assignments determined to be too big a risk for other knightly orders. While most bards focus on his battle with Beryl, he had become a popular hero within Sirastir years earlier.Elemental Unrest
In 275 YR, Luctor was sent with a detachment of knights to investigate the source of trade disruption in the high deserts near his hometown of Lethorp. Months of investigation and skirmishes ensued as it was determined that fire elementals were establishing a staging area within an ancient temple built into the canyon wall near Rike's Deep. 17 knights and 43 men-at-arms charged into the temple. A week later, Luctor and one other knight emerged, carrying four men-at-arms on a stretcher between the two of them, with the fractured core of a Brimstone Elemental in their pack. The survivors spoke of Luctor's tireless vigilance as he led the charge against the Brimstone despite the serious injury he had suffered in their initial day within the temple. In Lethorp, a feast day was held in honor of the 6 survivors and the many fallen, with great emphasis on the son of the city who'd come to their rescue. Meanwhile, in Sheabluff the official analysis considered Luctor was too brash in his tactics, and announced a period of mourning for the 15 fallen knights.Dracolich & Ser Geras's Tomb
In 280 YR, undead disturbed several settlements west of Bella Hill. Celenwe Maltanthir, Highpriest of Thoth, dispatched Ser Luctor to investigate an ancient tomb believed to be the source, and potentially a base of operations for The Unearthed. To ensure this mission was more to the priests liking, Ambassador Lia Amakler was assigned to accompany him, as was the veteran tracker and sharpshooter Haggle Shortstance. Luctor and his companions determined that the source of the undead was a dracolich which had awakened in the tomb of Ser Geras Picklechips, a hero of the 2nd Age. Unable to relocate its original form, the dracolich had summoned a small horde of undead and ordered them to find the remains of guard drakes and other large reptiles to reassemble a form suitable to the lich's ego. Discovering the operation before the creature was fully formed, the party was able to waylay a dracolich and its swarm of ghouls outside the town of Balmoor. According to legend, Shortstance and Amakler made short work of the ghouls, the ranger's blade seeming to strike true at the heads of his foes, while Luctor engaged the half-formed monstrosity in solo combat. Tales of this battle include the first references to Luctor's iconic greatsword 'Saurglyce Bane". The undead threat removed, Luctor took a circuitous route back to Sheabluff, stopping to offer assistance to many of the smaller settlements that are overlooked by the central government. A chance meeting with the notable bard Lorethario J. Hux led to Luctor's legend spreading like wildfire throughout northern and western Sirastir.Beryl & The Green Dragon Flight
In 282 YR, Ser Luctor and Ambassador Amakler had a chance sighting of multiple young green dragons while skirting the border of Beryl's realm to investigate claims of fey predators originating from the Forest of Felmoor. Returning with occasional companions Fireforge and Hallwinter, a skirmish with a younger dragon resulted in Beryl hearing their death cries and making an appearance north of their territory. Luctor used this sighting to gain an official commission to hunt down the Dragon Overlord and end his reign. The Highpriests in Sheabluff sent assistance in the form of money and archers, while Luctor and expanded his party with additional companions and set about planning their attack. A year later, Luctor and company engaged the great green wyrm near their lair in the Narrowlands on the coast of the Dragon Sea. As the legend goes, the battle raged on for days and covered miles of rivers, marshlands and forests before Luctor struck the fatal blow. In 285 YR, Luctor along with Amakler, Fireforge, Khalid, Hallwinter, and several other surviving companions purged the remainder of the Green Dragonflight from the area. As word of another major accomplishment boosted Luctor's popularity with the citizens of Sirastir, the Highpriests in Sheabluff held a parade and feast day in his honor, culminating in the announcement of a new Principality being created in the lands so recently liberated by the hero of the day. As the head of state of another nation, Luctor was no longer eligible to hold lands, property or office in Sirastir, though he was permitted to maintain his allegiance to the Knights of Paladine and encouraged to create a local branch in due time.Argyle
