Principality of Argyle

"We didn't win our freedom" the surly halfling veteran finally spoke up from the corner of the bar. "The great 'Hero of the Realm' freed the land from Beryl and we were his prize."

Government & Founding

The Principality of Argyle is a sovereign state in central eastern Emergo. Founded in 283 YR, Argyle is the only Principality on the continent, and the only nation that observes a "royal" ruler, currently Prince Luctor. This title of Prince was the result of a mutual agreement between Luctor and the High Priests of Sirastir as a way to show that Argyle was separate from the Theocratic state to their north, but not to name Luctor as "king" lest it cast any illusion to the line of Caelian kings who ruled these lands 300 years ago.

Geography & Population

Argyle is bordered by Sirastir to the North, and Marothell on the West and South. To the East, Argyle has a small coastline with quality ports for any sea-faring traders, though the infrastructure to support shipments via these ports is in an infancy.   The Principality of Argyle covers 1,110 square miles. It is estimated that 36% of this land is primal wilderness while the remaining 64% is potentially arable, making Argyle one of the most fertile patches of land per capita.   As of the year 300 YR, the population of Argyle is estimated at 111,000 people, all immigrants. Given their proximity to Sirastir and Marothell, large portions of the Argyle population came from these states and often identify with the traditions of their previous homeland.

Peace and Prosperity in the realm. Increasing religious freedom and private property.

History

First Age

During the time of the Xolmecs, much of what would become Argyle was still covered by the seas. As the seas receded, fertile land was discovered by surface tribes and coveted by the last vestiges of the Xolmecs. No history of settlements or heroes from this time is associated directly with Argyle.

Second Age

As the sea level dropped and the climate evolved, Argyle became an important area for the early Caelian kings who moved quickly to unite or conquer most of the surface tribes. Nearly all ruins, keeps and earlier settlements found in Argyle date back to this period. While other states seceded from the kingdom, it is thought that the population here stayed loyal until the cataclysm.

Third Age

  • ~30 YR - The land that would become Argyle is incorporated into the growing Theocracy of Sirastir. The high priests of Sirastir enforce limited religious choices on the belief that only the "true gods" remained after the cataclysm.
  • ~162 YR - The wyrm that would become Beryl is first spotted in the area.
  • 165 YR - Beryllinthranox establishes a proper lair in the area south of modern-day Badum.
  • 168 - 240 YR - Beryl's territory and influence grows as towns are razed or abandoned and the landscape is warped
  • 250 YR - The first reports of the Green Dragon Flight circulate beyond Argyle and start to reach Sheabluff
  • 283 YR - Ser Luctor and his companions defeat the great green dragon Beryl in a battle at The Narrowlands.
  • 285 YR - Ser Luctor purges the remnants of the Green Dragon Flight and staves off invasion from other beasts eager to take over Beryl's lair. The high priests of Sirastir elect to grant Luctor the lands he has liberated and recognize him as the sovereign Prince of Argyle in an official treaty.
  • 286 YR - Luctor formally establishes three unnamed Duchys within Argyle
  • 287 YR - Ambassadors from Menimrest, Marothell and Orgia make their appearance at court in Badum, formally recognizing the sovereignty of Argyle and Prince Luctor. Shortly thereafter Luctor and his nation are admitted to the Lord's Alliance.

Territories

Argyle is split into three major provinces and the capital region. Each province is overseen by one of Prince Luctor of Argyle's most trusted allies
  • Capital Region - Prince Luctor
  • Northwest Argyle - Duchess Amakler
  • Southwest Argyle - Duke Khalid (formerly)
  • Southeast Argyle - Duke Fireforge

Trade & Transport

Argyle's chief exports include metal ores, minerals, produce, furs, and leatherworking. The border with Sirastir is loosely defined and much independent trade happens in this area, while the government tends to strike deals with Marothell and Toria for larger purchases to support new infrastructure.
