Dean

"There are two kinds of Tabians in this world; those who are Dean, and those who wish they were."

Dean [Day-ahn] and the country Dea [Day-ah]

These Tabians are the second most common race and moderate in number.

They reside along the Ariella Divide that splits the continent in two. They are the rulers of the sea and are quickly mastering the art seafaring, astronomy and astrology. The Sigil of Dea had recently been changed by King Lance McKenath when he rose to power. It depicts the front of his ship Rhovanielle on the water, with the modified Ternary of Dea above it.

UNIQUE TRAITS

Tabians cannot swim, and yet there are a rare few of this race that can. The reason is truly unknown. Because of this, the seafaring group of Dean people have overcome their fear of the deep sea. Coasting upon imitate death is an exhilarating faux paus to them. They can also hold liquor unlike any other. It is unusual to meet a Dea Tabian whom does not drink spirits.

QUIRKS

  • They cannot resist the urge to gamble or make a game out of the most serious events.
  • Even the Dean people landlocked are obsessed with "obtaining" wealth, objects and rare collections.
  • The loss from the war with Gierra is generational and still felt by the people today as though it had occurred recently.
  • Their racism may get them in more trouble than it is worth.
  • COMMON JARGON

The Irish jargon and accent is strong. Pirates have a mix of this and "sea talk", a slurred dialect that can be difficult to understand to the untrained ear.

More unique jargon will be written here in time.

"Softfoot" - Someone who has not sailed or ever been on a ship.

"Landlocked" - Someone who cannot or will not visit the sea.

    "Fleas/Norans" - Eleanora race

    "Rats" - Gierra race

    "Stripe-uns" - Northern race

    APPEARANCE

Fur patterns are gradients of two colors or a solid color. They could have stripes inherited from the Northern race that cannot be passed on to the next generation. Eyes are either very dark, or pastel light of any color. They are also usually taller in height than other races.

    CLOTHING AND COLORS

Deans enjoy darker dyes or lack of it. Beyond the common Tabian wrapping technique, this sea faring and mountainside community combination like to layer, adorn themselves with found or stolen trinkets and gear up well for fighting and sailing.

    FOOD

Dean food is traditional, flavorful and simple. Vegetable stews, breads, cheese, nuts, potatoes and liquor consists of the typical Dean diet. Saltkeep rum is made here from sugar cane harvested from the southern islands.

“Best while you have it use your breath.. because there is no drinking after death!”

    UNIQUE HOLIDAYS

Flea Hunt An entire night dedicated to "hunting the enemy" and purging them from Dea's Grotto, the capital of Dea. It is a therapeutic reminder of how the Dean people were treated during the war and doing something about it. Any "Fleas or Rats" are hunted. The announcement of the night is random and generally happens once a year when leaders feel outsiders have grown too close and peachy. This is not hunting any Tabian of that country's race specifically, it is purging (well, murdering) oposition from the capitol. Outsiders are interrogated and ransacked for evidence of any suspicious allegiance. If you are not a citizen of Dea and are visiting Dea's Grotto on holiday during a Flea Hunt.. you should hide. Quickly.
Dea's Luck (Last full moon of the year) Gambling night. Dice, coin and cards seems to act different on this day. Will you be granted favor, or not? What the hell did you do to deserve such a colossal loss!?
Lance's Awakening The day Lance wakes up from his healing sleep. As egotistical as he could be about it, he does not particularly care about this holiday. When he and his crew of Rhovanielle make it back home from a long journey, Lance submerges himself deep into the cenote of Dea's Grotto. There he sleeps within its' depths for days, sometimes weeks until he is fully healed. The townsfolk gather when he awakens. "It's kinda cute, actually." -Lance. Read more about that here.
Dark Rum Day (Summer) Dark rum cask opening day! Happens every single year without fail. Deans would rather die than miss this holiday.
Fuisce Cainéal Lance established this holiday so that his people would import better whiskey into the capitol. No one complained about that! It is his favorite drink- whiskey neat with a cinnamon stick. Although he tried to make it a particular day, Deans tend to celebrate this drink whenever they want to. To Lance's utter dismay they have nicknamed it "The King's Elixr" in taverns.]
Star Rhapsody (Winter solstice) The holiday's name is so wholesome, because.. it is. The Deans respect the night sky for its' forever unchanging map, used reliably for any Tabian to find their way back home, for centuries. The night is spent eating good food and drink while exchanging stories on the mountainside, rooftops and beaches.

    POLITICAL VIEWS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Deans do not take kindly to anyone outside their country very well. Eleanorans can trade with them only unfairly since King Lance has a hold on the trade routes by the throat. Gierrans are treated as enemies. The most political Deans are racist in this regard.   There are smaller organizations, but the most notable are two distinct cults.

  • Rhovanielle Tender // aka Gilded Sea

These people see Lance as the flesh and bone incarnation of the deity Dea and follow him and his idiosyncratic ship Rhovanielle for life (members are both land and sea bound). They speak of the world's most believed God, Eleanora, as though she is more like a person that once was and not their creator.

  • Wolfex Fire Cult

The cult who believe the Wolfex species are divine, created only to destroy Tabians, and should be worshiped and respected as such because they will trigger the end of the world in order to bring about a new one.

  • Both cults believe Tabians and Wolfex have similar souls and chose to act more like wolfex in behavior than Tabians such as vorking "barking", howling, some pull the hair on their tails for years to get them to look longer like the wolfex tail, eating red meat (this makes Tabians sick), sharpening their teeth, attempt to train and care for the wolfex, wear masks that look like a wolfex face, collect bones and are obsessed with death and the supernatural, and swim. They have a love of fire, arson specifically. Around 90% of the world is in Eleanoran faith including some of those that live in Dea. These people however are part of the 10% in Dea faith.
