Darkness
Overview
Darkness is the primordial force of darkness, shadows, and night. They are known as Darkness, the Twin of Light, or Darkness, the Ruler, and sometimes as Darkness, the King of the Primordials. They are the oldest offspring of Void and the twin of Light. They are the parent of Xyphria and Mystraen by Chaos, Grímmdr by Order, Lyrina and Zelfroc by Light, and Oneira by their daughter Lyrina.
Description
Darkness is not known to have a physical form. When depicted in art or stories, they are described as a living shadow. Patriarchal societies often associate a male energy with Darkness and call them "he," while referring to Light with the feminine pronoun. While this makes sense for the natural reproduction that occurred with Light and Lyrina, Chaos and Order are never strictly given feminine presentations.
History
Most mythologies agree that Darkness is one of the first beings to ever exist, either the first primordial brought into existence by Mother Void or the second primordial, but certainly one of the twins born by Void.
Darkness and Light are often interpreted as the Rulers of the Primordials and are the only two amongst the Primordials who could be interpreted as being "married," even if this marriage is an open one based on their offspring with many other divine beings. Darkness' offspring tend to be associated with mystery, as their children include the domains of Mystery, Secrets & Whispers, Trickery & Illusion, Dreams, and Luck & Prosperity. Their grandchildren include Wisdom & Transformation and Fear & Courage, which align well with Darkness' nature. The only one of their offspring that doesn’t seem to fit this pattern but still has a special connection with Darkness is Grímmdr, who was birthed by Order. Grímmdr, the God of Craftsmanship & Earth, is tied to the Dark of the Earth. Many mythologies call Grímmdr the Favourite of Darkness.
Relevance
Like all Primordials, Darkness is not actively involved in mortal affairs, nor are they revered or prayed to. There are no temples to Darkness, nor does any religion honour them specifically. They are accepted as a fundamental force of the universe. While sometimes demonised due to their dark connotations, Darkness has never acted to harm creation.
