Fenfield

Fenfield is the third largest town in Achitar. Blessed by water from Lake Vallis, small villages have formed in the nearby plains where they grow and harvest wheat, vegetables and other produce for the lords of the land, who then brings it to Fenfield and from there it is distributed across the kingdom. The main bulk of the kingdom's rural population resides in these villages. The rural villages remain vulnerable to savage raiders, which has given raise to the xenophobic culture experienced in the region.   Marquis Jesken Hanholm, a princely and jovial human with a flair for hosting, is the noble in charge of Fenfield. Because the Hanholm family is the only one of the three marquis families of the kingdom to have had one of its members be apart of King Virreau I's initial expedition to find the continent, the Hanholm family shares an especially close relatonship with the royal family. Jesken Hanholm is proud of this fact, utilizing his status and pretty landscape to frequently host visiting nobles and dignitaries, showing them the "best" side of the kingdom.

Government

The government as a whole is relaxed, allowing freedom to the people. The recently appointed ruler of Fenfield, Marquis Alarik Hanholm holds a firm hand over the city. Overall, he delegates many tasks to people he appoints rather than overlooking everything himself as most on his position would do. The kingdom at large is governed by King Virreau III in his castle, near the northern edge of the Port Prine.

Defences

The city has two layers of defences. First are the city walls that are always manned by trained soldiers. Then there is the castle that's positioned at the very east of the city, precisely at the location where it's the most likely to be attacked by invading hobgoblin armies if they ever reached that far into territory. Having thick walls and many tall bastions, Fenfield stands only second to Cryll in regards to defences.

Industry & Trade

The city's main source of income are the so called cash crops. Over the recent years, trade shifts from shipping the goods to Prine, to directly exporting it with the widened river. There is also significant production of diary, many food items as well as more luxurious foods like chocolate.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure of the city consists of a net of roads over a wide area. The density of buildings is rather low with the exception of the area directly by the castle. Most of the buildings in the city have a sewer access, with the exception of the lower-class areas. The whole area around Fenfield spans many types of fields, with some even being inside the city walls. Most crops are processed inside the city, as well as at the watermills built along the main river, with some windmills being located only further away from the city. After the river was widened, a sizeable harbour was built to help process the goods the city produces through a more reliable transport route. The city's blacksmiths and other metalworks are rather sparse compared to Prine or Cryll as there's not much natural mineable resources nearby, but still enough to fill the basic needs of the city.

History

Fenfield is built on the sweat and blood of Achitarian people. As the city with the longest history of wars in the country, it spans many castles and forts to the east and in the surroundings. Initially, it was built in mind with the fertile earth and vast fields spanning in every direction, becoming the breadbasket of Achitar. During the coup that ultimately resulted in Achitar becoming an independent country, Fenfield was plunged into chaos, and lost most of their military power, which resulted in the only instance where the hobgoblin forced were almost able to breach the city's defenses. In the later years control was established and in time the Hanholm family became the rulers of the city.   Most recently, the ruler Jesken Hanholm has been [assassinated] on his way from Prine to Fenfield, his son Alarin Hanholm took over the reins. During the past year many changed happened in the city, including streamlining the infrastructure of the city, rapidly expanding and creating many vital services in the city, conscripting many talents towards the city in what other call [The Call for Talent Event], as well as putting focus on a more rewarding system for even the most common people around. This put him at odds with many nobles but the results are undeniable – the city started to flourish only after a year under his rule.

Architecture

The architecture of the city varies between the rich and common districts. From the Silver District to the Forlorn District, big box buildings serve as housing and stores. Built of stone and wood (mostly wood for the poorest districts), it is clear that these buildings were built to satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for housing and business space over their aesthetics. As a result, those looking over the city from higher up can note the big cluster of rectangular buildings near the Silver Road. More traditional-style buildings comprise the Brightstone and Old Ward districts. Of note is that stone used in these buildings are covered with a layer of rock embedded with numerous tiny crystals. The way these crystals and the buildings they line glisten in the light is considered a luxury reserved for those with deep wallets.

Geography

The city and the surroundings are mostly plains, with a few small hills that are used as defensive positions as well as Lake Vallis to the south of the city.

Natural Resources

What's most plentiful in the city, is the natural fertile ground for growing crops and the available vast space. This doesn’t mean that Fenfield doesn’t have any other natural resources. There’s a few veing or metal that minimize the need for importing metal to the city, clay mines as well as a few rich spots with stone to make quarries. The lake next to the city is also a good source of food and fresh water.
