Felix Crowley

Felix Alister Crowley (a.k.a. Fei Shuwen, the Millward Arsonist)

"I knew you'd come back to haunt me someday. I should have strangled you in your crib the night you were born."
- Edward Crowley
At first glance, it can be difficult to imagine Felix as the son of renowned swordsman Edward S. Crowley, as to hear Felix put it the two did not see eye to eye. Felix's rough appearance, clear disdain for any sort of authority, and all around gloomy expression denotes a man who grew up on the other side of the Roland coin, but with a bit of background, his lineage begins to form a steady, obvious logic.   Felix, at his heart, is a lonely person desperate to serve some kind of purpose, but believes more than anything that he is doomed to repeat the worst days of his life any time he tries. Whether he's on to something or not, when Felix does step into the world, he does so with the intense flame of Irohan magic at his command. At his best, Felix is a warrior, a shadow soul and the final bulwark for his allies.   However, with his penchant for dishonesty, obfuscation, and deception at his worst, Felix is an unreliable weapon, who might blow up as much as he might fight anyone.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Felix is physically fit and agile, but the years of emotional and physical burnout show in his sunken eyes and general irritability.

Body Features

As Felix's strength is enhanced by Irohan magic, he uses less energy to exert far more force, resultingly, although Felix does have some muscular definition, his frame is relatively thin.

Facial Features

Felix has a long face with a straight jawline, and closely resembles his father including thick sideburns that trace down the sides of his skull to the turn in his jawbone. His eyes, while wide, have small pupils with his eyebrows sat low on top. While under most circumstances Felix has something of a dour expression, when he is enjoying himself it tends to display clearly across his face.

Identifying Characteristics

Without considering hair or clothing, Felix looks almost identical to his father at the same age, however where Edward tended to tie his hair back in a tight bun, Felix has a lush mane of hair that flies out in every direction from his head and falls back into a long, thin ponytail draped all the way down to his knees.

Physical quirks

Felix, even asleep, tends to look upset about something. Felix is also prone to drowning out of long conversations and often sticks his back against a wall when near a crowd.

Special abilities

Felix is an adept practitioner of Southern Shadow Dragon Martial Arts. This fighting technique employs magical forces for a number of special features and abilities:
  • 1. Enhanced fortitude - Felix is able to ignore injuries and mortal wounds that don't outright kill him. While Felix does still feel the pain of the injury, his wound spills out a crimson flame that pools like blood but fades away after a period of time. Additionally, wounds dealt with in this manner heal at an increased rate, almost instantly depending on Felix's focus.
  • 2. Enhanced strength - Whether it be giant rocks or a fully grown wyvern, through use of magic Felix can possess an immense physical strength that can crack dense, heavy objects and structures in two.
  • 3. Enhanced agility - Felix can clear long distances in a single step, and dash with the force of a fast motorbike. This is most often lauded over others as he traverses city tops in the midst of backflips.
  • 3. Irohan Fire magic - In addition to increasing his strength, through the use of this form Felix can ignite his internal energies in a bright crimson flame that engulfs his arms, shoulders, and parts of his hair. At Felix's current skill level, he can use this fire as a medium-sized projectile which will burn targets and to enhance his own punches and kicks.
  • 4. Shadow striking - The last magical technique Felix learned in the short time before the Millward incident. Felix channels his fire magic into multiple copies of his physical shape, the duplicates then follow Felix's motions as he attacks a target directly. While not wholly remarkable on its own, with a complicated series of attacks multiple copies can prove overwhelming.
  • 5. Hachiman - The name given to a distinct escalation inherit in Irohan fire magic where the user bypasses the normal safeties that prevent the magic from consuming their vital life forces. The entire body is consumed in a brightly colored flame, and the physical form is slowly replaced by a body of pure fire. Using the distinct soul as a fuel source results in an immense increase in power and ferocity, but is seen as a suicidal last stand. Within the culture, such a sacrifice is seen as the highest battle honor.

Apparel & Accessories

Felix dresses in a long, loose fitting Irohan martial arts tunic, a leather traveling jacket, a wool hoodie, a bright red sash, and loose tied all terrain boots. His clothing is weathered, heavily worn, and patched in places.

Specialized Equipment

At a later part in the story, Felix comes into possession of a ghostchain knife, a tanto style dagger with an ethereal chain attached at the end. The chain can be engulfed in flames and used as a weapon.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

While Edward and Emily may, at one point, have felt a genuine love for each other; for as long as Felix could remember, they only ever grew further and further apart. For his part, Felix and his father were never close even in childhood, but as Felix grew older and started to find his own identity, the few times he and Edward did interact tended to result in a fight between the two them. Unwilling to bridge the gap, Edward spent most of his time away from their home, leaving Emily to raise Felix by herself in the The Bottom Rows of the Roland capitol city, Aristia.   Despite his otherwise general distrust for authority, Emily broke through to her son through an heirloom the two of them could share, Southern Shadow Dragon Martial Arts, a unique discipline of the larger Irohan martial arts pioneered by her family back in Iroha over a thousand years ago. A kind, but strict teacher, while Emily and Felix grew close as master and disciple, this too caused a distance to form between their relationship as parent and child. As a result, while Felix was respectful and courteous to her, outside of the house he tended to go his own way and find his own trouble to get into.   In 1901 at the age of 16, Felix's parents divorced. Emily and Felix moved to the paper industry factory complex city of Millward, which at the time was the home of the largest community of ethnic Irohans on the Roland mainland. Emily opened a stationary shop, and was eager to find some sort of relationship with the other Irohans in her neighborhood. Felix however caught the attention of a local gang leader, Gene A. Corte III. Gene and Felix became fast friends, along with Gene's lieutenant Meryl J. Kingsport. In a year, the plucky band of three misfits were folded into the larger Corte Company, and before long Gene and Felix were on ships headed around the world, on behalf of the family patriarch, Gene Corte Sr..   As soon as he could, Felix ran from Millward on a steamer ferry to Port Bastion. Over the next four years on the Genes' behalf, he engaged in dozens of robberies and petty thefts across Roland and Gebelwalt. Young and eager to prove himself, Felix was all too happy to accept whatever work the Corte Company had for the gifted fighter, whether it be theft, burglary, or more insidious and permanent dirty work.   Upon arrival back at Emily's stationary shop Millward, Felix found his father Edward in the midst of an attempt to woe his former wife back into his arms. Felix leapt on Edward and the two began to brawl, their fight spilled into the hallway until Edward drew his sword on Felix. With her own body as a shield, Emily demanded that Edward leave. Edward refused, and countered with a demand that Emily choose one of them and cast out the other. Emily chose Felix, and while Edward returned to the capitol in the end, Emily had no kind words for Felix in the months that followed.   Almost immediately Felix recognized what he had done, what he had forced his mother to do. Over the next year until the winter of 1905, Felix worked in the shop quietly and tried to find a way past what his anger. However, just before the end of the year, Gene came to Felix with another mission that he was unable to do on his own.   The assassination of Edward Crowley.   The two traveled to the island of Ilsbard where Edward had been dispatched to quell a frontier revolt, and ambushed the swordsman together. Indeed, it was a fight that required both of them, but despite Edward's best efforts Felix managed to tackle him to the ground and strangle him. The incident was marked as a war casualty, and Felix quietly returned to Millward. However, Edward's friends in the capitol began to investigate the incident, and soon Felix found himself pursued by Marcus R. Foxwood Jr., whose prowess in combat mirrored that of Edward himself.   On a quiet winter evening, just before dusk, with the snow fresh in the street under amber streetlight as they flickered on all around the concrete city of Millward, Marcus confronted Felix about the murder out in the open outside Emily's stationary shop. Without even so much as an attempt to hide his guilt, Felix fled into the warehouse district alleyways in an attempt to escape. Alone and hopelessly outmatched, Felix tried to use his magic to light the warehouses ablaze, to serve as a distraction, but where Edward underestimated him Marcus would not. With monstrous strength and fortitude to match, Marcus dismantled Felix even as the warehouses around them burned bright in the afternoon sky.   Just as Marcus prepared to land the killing blow, Emily emerged from the flames to stand against him. Even as the fire grew, and began to lash against the roof of the store, Emily ignited her own golden flame in the shape of a massive bearded dragon. Marcus, for his effort, tried to convince Emily to stand back, that Felix needed to face judgement, but Emily wouldn't hear it.   As the dragon and the bear engulfed Millward in the firestorm of their battle, as Emily vanished into the flames and Marcus returned home with Felix's guilt fresh in his mind, Felix ran.

Gender Identity

Felix identifies as a male, his assigned gender at birth.

Sexuality

Felix identifies as a demisexual.

Education

While Felix's formal educated had ended by the time he moved to Millward, in the years that followed Felix gained an education in how to navigate the underbelly of society, as well as a competent understanding of Irohan martial arts. Additionally, Felix is acutely observational, and with almost 10 years by himself to contemplate a life of mistakes, he can be good for the occasional bit of introspective wisdom.

Employment

Felix is unemployed, he scavenges airship parts from the scattered remains littered throughout the cliffs of the Wyvernteeth Divide.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Following the events in Millward, Felix isolated himself for 10 years to sort through his emotions by himself. While Felix fears that he is not as centered as he thinks he is, how he responds to events now versus how he responded in his youth show that he has begun to heal and learn, at least a little bit. This is a sort of accomplishment.

Failures & Embarrassments

In hindsight, Felix views most of his life leading up to Millward as a misstep or a failure. While at the time, he was acting in what he thought was best for himself and Gene, now Felix knows at least in part that he was mistaken. More than anything, the way that Edward got under his skin is Felix's biggest failure, and the crux by which his biggest failings are rooted. The flash of red that came over him, and the desire to always be on the attack is something that Felix has spent a decade trying to get away from.

Mental Trauma

As indicated in the other chapters, Felix spent much of his life at constant odds with his father, Edward Crowley. While Felix was on some occasion the aggressor, whenever the two would interact Felix would be overcome with a deep hatred and contempt, and for that moment wanted nothing more than to wound Edward in the deepest way possible. In his youth, Felix would try to shift the blame onto Edward, justifying his emotions on Edward's antagonism, but in the aftermath of Millward Felix came to realize that, in some way, Felix wanted to be angry as much as Edward made him angry.   Felix doesn't as much feel regret for how he interacted with Edward, as he does feel shame over how it rolled over to his mother. This guilt looms over him at all times, and to this day causes him to stay as far away from others as he physically can.

Intellectual Characteristics

As noted, Felix is impressively perceptive, and while his scholastic knowledge is lacking Felix can pin down a person's game with pinpoint accuracy and in record time. Felix can be somewhat blockheaded most other times, but he stays cool as a cucumber even when he's out of his element.

Morality & Philosophy

Despite the morally gray nature of his background, Felix follows a concept of fair play, straightforwardness, and honesty (where appropriate). He doesn't outright lie, but he will obfuscate the truth if he thinks the situation isn't right for it, and takes most things at face value otherwise. Felix also draws a distinct line between fighting for fun and fighting for violence, and as such views the harmless bout as a good time, but otherwise steers away from unnecessary violence.

Taboos

While a bit of deception can be warranted under certain circumstances, Felix tries hard not to lie or cheat others where he can avoid it. Felix has seen a lot of the worst rings of society, and as a result can tolerate other people doing objectionable things, but Felix will not partake in something he ultimately is not comfortable with.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

For the majority of his upbringing, Felix's only motivation was to find himself out in the world around him. He accomplished this through his allegiance with the The Corte Company, but never quite found a common ground of respect with the other major dragon to be fought, his relationship with his parents.   This crossroads ultimately came to an end during the events of the Long Afternoon, where Felix's mother Emily died defending him from Lord Admiral Marcus Foxwood and his band of pursuers. After that, Felix's endeavors turned to hiding, and making a meager living harvesting scrap out on the territory frontline. However, as Gene, his fickle motivation changes.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Felix is not well in a crowd, he has a near neurotic obsession with evaluating his surroundings and this only leads to over stimulation in the circus of a busy street. That said, one on one whether it be in a conversation or in a fight, Felix can zero in and actually be a bit charming from time to time. Felix also has an uncanny perception, owing to said hyper vigilance in watching people, and can be the first to clue into strings and details.

Likes & Dislikes

Owing to a thrill for challenge taught by his mother, Felix enjoys a good, honest duel that ends with a handshake. Though adept in the workings of the societal underbelly, Felix doesn't enjoy that work anymore and never can truly say he ever did. Felix enjoys honest, fair contests and abhors political language.

Virtues & Personality perks

Though in a societal sense, Felix is dishonest and untrustworthy with a flippant disregard for authority, for better or worse he has a resolute emotional honesty. If he is angry, it shows, if he is happy, it shows. When Felix is putting up a wall and trying to act cool, not only is it clear that he is acting, but beneath only a few layers one can find the truth to the act underneath. He'll respect a good play, Despite the outward thorns, he can actually be quite likeable.

Vices & Personality flaws

Despite his best efforts, Felix is still the same person he's always been, and as such carries the weight of his mistakes in everything he does. It causes him pause from engaging with others, and has convinced him that the best he can accomplish is to be left alone in the mountains, regardless of how alone he feels. This compromise is his biggest flaw. Aside from that, Felix can be duplicitous with the information he shares with others, and can often steal the agency from others under the blank assumption that his course of action is the correct one.

Hygiene

Felix cleans his more vital areas and changes his socks on a regular basis, but his outer clothing and hair are largely left to the wind.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Felix has close connections with Gene Corte III of the Corte Company, as well as Meryl Kingsport, however he has not talked to either of them in close to 10 years.

Family Ties

Felix's parents are both deceased, as are Edward's extended family, while the Shuwen clan has cut Emily off entirely.

Religious Views

Felix doesn't hold any particular religious view, but follows a loose understanding of Irohan theology passed down from his mother.

Social Aptitude

Felix is shy, reserved, and largely keeps to himself. While he can be capable of a flash of charisma when in private, in public he tends to clam up and stay quiet.

Mannerisms

Felix's mannerisms tend to be short, directed, and to the point. He has a casual lean, but also wastes no more movement than is absolutely necessary.

Hobbies & Pets

Felix enjoys cooking and catch-and-release, bare-handed large game hunting.

Speech

Short, simple, but with a stern edge when the point needs to get across.
