The Ashlands
Geography
The ash enriched the landscape once it settled, allowing the plants that survived to adapt and thrive in the new environment. The few animals that survived and stayed in the area also changed and adapted to flourish in this new land. The environmental hazards within the ashlands are numerous. To begin, the ashlands are always hot, reaching upwards of 40°C. The landscape is also pockmarked with pockets of lava, with some areas being the size of lakes. In addition to these lava pockets, pyroclastic flows form rivers throughout the entirety of the region.
Localized Phenomena
Occasionally, fierce winds will kick up large quantities of ash, creating ashstorms that ravage an area and make sight nigh impossible.
Fauna & Flora
The only civilized races to make their home in the ashlands are the azer as well as goliaths of fire giant descent and the fireforged vect that serve the azer. The floating city of Stogizan maintains its position in the southeast of Vukeron and the paladin Xorenath established his holy order and its base of operations, the Varahossthold, within the borders of the ashlands to ensure only those serious about joining the order would make the trek. The local greenskin populace appears to have absorbed the latent magical energy and transformed to better survive in the ashlands. These greenskins have taken on a gray skin tone and refer to themselves as 'ashen ones.'
The monstrous hazards are no better, with many of the former residents of the ruins of civilization having been turned into undead creatures called ash zombies. Various other dangerous creatures make their homes in the ashlands. Chimeras and greenskins are some of the more common creatures reported in the area. According to some, a titanic dragon that bears the same undead, ash-covered appearance of the ash zombies has been seen scouring the ruins of various cities.
History
The Ashfall is an event that occurred in Era 1, 1223. The Ashfall was caused by an evocation ritual that was performed inside Mount Blackcloud after Tiamat's arrival in the world through the volcano. The eruption caused was devastating, and the volcano emitted an unnaturally large amount of ash which was blown to the southeast of Vukeron. The ash settled in vast quantities, killing plants, animals, and men alike. The Ashfall destroyed cities and villages all through the area. The most notable city destroyed by the Ashfall was Darvenguard.
