Quarzilad-Arthak
Government
Quarzilad-Arthak is ruled by a monarch called a thane who is elected by the quarrying guild from any male adult members of the ruling house. The thane serves until his death.
Defences
Like many dwarven holds, Quarzilad-Arthak is built into a mountain and is thus exceptionally easy to defend. The fortified dwarven stone walls of the entry gate make it an easy to hold chokepoint where invasions are cut to a slow crawl by staunch dwarven warriors.
Industry & Trade
The most important industry in Quarzilad-Arthak is their quarrying. The stone of Quarzilad-Arthak is shipped far and wide to be used in building castles, palaces, and other buildings due to its inherent strength and beauty. Stone cutters and masons also ply their trade here, and caravans often pass through to take shipments of stone to other cities.
Infrastructure
Quarzilad-Arthak is primarily a quarry. The majority of their infrastructure is set up to support this, with massive mines, stone cutting operations, and caravan businesses making their homes here in order to capitalize off of the abundant and strong stone that exists in the region.
Districts
The city is divided into a handful of districts. The entrance to the city leads directly into the market district. Beyond the market district lays the guild district, where the masons, stonecutters, and quarriers have their respective guildhalls. In addition, the thane's stronghold and retinue barracks are found here. The residential district is east of the market. The industrial district, where the masons and stone cutters have their businesses, is west of the market. In addition, the quarrying district is also found to the west, just a tad beyond the industrial district.
Guilds and Factions
The main three guilds are the Masons' Guild, the Stonecutters' Guild, and the Quarriers' Guild. Politically, the Quarriers' Guild is exceptionally powerful due to their control of the quarries and their right to choose the next thane.
History
The mountains and hills that belong to Quarzilad-Arthak are actually the remains of an ancient and powerful primordial earth elemental that was summoned and defeated in an age long past. The stone that makes up its body was, and still is, imbued with exceptionally powerful magic from the elemental plane of earth. This magic makes the stone many times harder than other stones, and it even surpasses some metals. This stone, referred to as dwarven stone, is famous for its protective qualities. Ceremonial suits of armor are made from it to be used by honor guards and military processions. Legendary dwarven heroes often come to Quarzilad-Arthak to get their own armor sets made from this dwarven stone because of its protective capabilities and cultural meaning, but it is exceptionally cumbersome and only the mightiest dwarves are able to use it successfully in combat situations.
